Horses vs. motorcycles

Since when is it ok for motorcycles to do "drive-by scare tactics" to horses? One drive-by was not enough to cripple my oldest mare as she was sunning herself in the turnout but the second time did the job really good.

I am not one to tell parents how to raise their children but there has got to be some kind of rule, law or ordinance to direct this type of negligence and animal abuse. This was a terrible act of abuse. I have also seen motorcyclists chasing after coyotes in my area.

This old mare had suffered a terrible accident one year ago from a hailstorm and it took six months to even get her to be comfortable.

Tonight she could barely walk into the barn. Her eyes strained with pain and I could see what I had to do once again (if it would even help) to keep her comfortable.

It is a 24/7 labor of love to properly care for an injured horse. I know, I still have that Lipizzan mare with laminitis. Now I will be caring for two lame and suffering horses during my Christmas and long after.

So thank you, motorcyclist. I hope you enjoyed yourself. You knew exactly what you were doing. You had plenty of Pahrump desert to enjoy. But why you had to purposely abuse horses is beyond my understanding.

Happy holidays.

Contested meeting

Commission meeting on Dec. 16, open?

I would like to contest the open meeting of the NCBOCC. The meeting was scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Dec. 16, as an open meeting for people of Pahrump. When we arrived at about 1 p.m. we noticed that at the front of the line of people waiting to go into the Ruud Center, most were wearing rather large yellow patches with "yes" on them.

We were told they were the people who were in favor of the CCA Prison, and they were allowed to enter the Ruud Center first.

Just prior to 1:30 p.m., Fire Chief Scott Lewis, accompanied by Sheriff DeMeo and a group of his deputies, came out and asked for the attention of the crowd. He then said no one would be allowed to leave and re-enter the building. This is an open meeting?

Furthermore, no one would be allowed to leave their seats or they would be escorted by the sheriff's deputies out of the building and not allowed to return.

I feel that the people who were against the CCA Prison coming to Pahrump were treated like criminals instead of citizens of Pahrump.

As we were allowed to enter the building and pass through the back of the large meeting room, we were directed to the small auxiliary room with very poor video display.

There were sheriff's deputies at all doors, and no one, to my knowledge, was allowed to leave the building.

Sometime later Joni Eastley as chairman opened the meeting.

The development agreement with CCA was discussed by some representatives and all that we, in the back room got to hear was numbers of paragraphs and pages as we had no copies of what was being discussed until later on in the afternoon.

When the chairman was informed that legal action had been filed in Las Vegas, it was just brushed aside as if it did not matter.

My personal opinion is I was not allowed to have any courtesy or respect from this body of elected officials as though they have no obligations to the people who elected them.

I protest that this meeting and all others like it are an insult to Pahrump citizens and we should take appropriate action to remove all of the commissioners immediately.

If you were there and against the CCA Prison coming to Pahrump, what are your feelings?
