Scout uniforms and equipment Pahrump has a number of boys ages 7-16 interested in scouting but need uniforms and gear. Donations of camping equipment and uniforms are appreciated. Free DVD Faith Fellowship is offering a free copy of the DVD, "The Greatest Gamble" with Kirk Cameron and Ray Comfort to anyone who is interested. Send requests to: Free DVD, P.O. Library fall reading program Pahrump Community Library's fall reading program, "Dino Tails," began Oct. 15. Classes are Tiny Dinos (ages 2-3), Wednesdays 9:15-9:45 a.m. (parent must accompany child); T-rex Tails (ages 4-5), Wednesdays 10-10:45 a.m.; Story Osaurus (ages 6-12), Wednesdays 3:30-4:30 p.m.; and Teens (fifth grade and up), Thursdays 3-4 p.m. There is no fee to attend the program and no prior sign up necessary. Adult literacy The Pahrump Community Library has a sufficient number of literacy tutors and is ready for students. Adults interested in getting help with reading skills, call 727-5930, ext. 19. The service is free. Notice to veterans Those serving in the military from April 6, 1917 to the present have an office in Pahrump and Tonopah to take advantage of earned military benefits including: compensation, pension, education and death and burial benefits. The Pahrump office is located in JobConnect in the Calvada Eye, Building A. The Tonopah office is located in the Nye Regional Medical Center on Main Street. Ken Shockley and his staff work full time to assist in doing all they can to help veterans take advantage of their earned benefits. The hours are 8-05 p.m. at the office locations or call 537-2323. Those unable to come to the office may get a home visit to get the ball rolling. Toastmasters meeting change The Pahrump Toastmasters 1970 have changed their meeting to 7 p.m., the first and third Wednesday of the month, in Room 123 of Great Basin College, 551 E. Calvada Blvd. Call 537-2125 for more information. West Star Ranch The West Star Ranch Old Dog Rescue Thrift Store is open 10-3 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday, 780 Manse Road. The proceeds support the no kill rescue. They ask the public to spay and neuter pets. PVCAT mission statement The PVCAT has revised its mission statement to read: "The Pahrump Valley Community Action Team ios organized to assist in planning, developing and implementing strategies that will promote Pahrump and give Pahrump a sense of community and community spirit." Retired/senior program The Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteers need help. This program enables the elderly to stay in their homes by assisting with daily maintenance such as shopping, medical appointments, etc. RSVP reimburses volunteers 30 cents per mile up to $20 per month and carries worker's compensation and excess auto liability on all volunteers. Additionally, volunteers receive training, annual seminar education and appreciation award dinners. To volunteer or get more information, call Jan Lindsay at 751-5282. CPR and first aid classes The Pahrump Valley Fire Rescue Services will hold CPR and first aid classes 6-9 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday and Wednesday of each month. Alzheimer's support group The Alzheimer's support group meets the second and fourth Wednesday of the month, UNR Cooperative Extension Office, 1651 E. Military soldiers and families "The Ladies Network: Making a Difference," would like to meet U.S. military active soldiers and their families, to find out more about supporting the troops. Wal-Mart Wall of Heros If you have a picture of someone who has served or is serving in the military, and would like a picture displayed on the south wall, bring an 8x10 photo with the first and last name, branch of service, dates of service, and phone number. Add $2 for the frame and drop all the information at the customer service desk. This is a stand alone project not affiliated with any other project or organization. Volunteer Homeland Reserve Unit VHRU is an organized group of retired and former law enforcement officers with the mission of providing trained and experienced resources to public safety agencies in Nevada and, potentially, to surrounding areas. VHRU maintains a Web site describing the mission and providing information regarding the organization, leadership, and on-going activities. The Web site also contains an application form that can be downloaded by any former law enforcement officer who wants to become a part of the organization. Focus on food for the holidays The Family Resource Center provided Thanksgiving dinner for a total of 1144 persons and are expecting twice that number to request Christmas dinner. Their focus is food for Christmas and most of the available funds in the Christmas account will go toward the purchase of hams, turkeys and other components of the Christmas meal. Toys will be distributed as they become available through Toys for Tots. They welcome all donations and food contributions and are encouraging community members to adopt one of the families registered with the organization for the holiday. Power wheelchairs Miracle on Wheels makes available electric power wheelchairs to non-ambulatory senior citizens 65 and older and the permanently disabled of any age, if they qualify. Electric wheelchairs are provided to those who cannot walk and also cannot operate a manual wheelchair sufficiently or safely enough to care for themselves in their residence. Host a student The NWS Peace program, a nonprofit and CSIET-approved program, is seeking families to host a high school student from Ecuador, Turkey, Brazil, Vietnam, Belgium, Finland and other countries for the 2009 school year. Students are 15-18 years old, are pre-screened, speak English, have medical insurance and spending money for clothes, school supplies and entertainment. Host families are not paid but may be able to claim a $50-per-month tax deduction for charitable contributions. Students require a bed, meals and a caring family. NDOT sign support The Nevada Department of Transportation will be installing sign supports for the service clubs and churches of Pahrump. All of those organizations interested in the programs should contact the Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce to complete an application. Pet adoptions The Nye County Animal Shelter will hold pet adoptions 10-2 p.m. every Saturday at Hollywood Video, 240 S. Highway 160. Due to the increase in animals at the Nye County Animal Shelter and the expenses in caring for them, the fees will increase. The fees for adopting a dog are $85 and the fees for adopting a cat or kitten are $55. Fees include spay/neuter, vaccination, rabies shot, a bag of food and one-year county license.
