VOLLEYBALL PV girls in Vegas tourney
By DON McDERMOTT
When Pahrump Valley plays in the Las Vegas Invitational Volleyball tournament today and Saturday, coach Jill Harris is looking for just one thing. "We want the girls to mesh, so we can find rotations that work," said Harris, back as head coach after two-season absence. As they prepare to compete in Class 4-A for the first time, the Lady Trojans are looking forward to competing in the always-tough Las Vegas Invitational. They had reasonable success playing in the tournament as a Class 3-A team. The Trojans, who lost to eventual champion Yerington in the Nevada state semifinals last season, will open the 2008 campaign at 4 p.m. against Bountiful, Utah. At 5, they take on Palo Verde, out of the Sunset Region Northwest Division, and at 7, PVHS will battle tournament host Las Vegas. The tournament resumes with revised pools Saturday at 8 a.m. Making the trip to Las Vegas today were seniors Shayna Smith, Vanessa Veloz, Karen Daun, Kristi Daffer, Jill Wulfenstein and Arlette Scott, along with sophomores Alyson Kunzi, Ashley Lindgren, Casey Scheller and Taylor Ball. Several juniors will be on the PVHS junior varsity team that will play in the Lady Trojans Invitational today and Saturday in the high school gym. "We going to go with a 6-2 set, with Kristi working mostly as an outside hitter," said Harris. Kristi Daffer is a two-time all-state choice back for her fourth season as a varsity starter.
