Pahrump Valley enters its 36th season of high school football Saturday, in a non-league game in Las Vegas against Mountain View Christian.

In 35 previous openers, the Trojans are 9-25-1; their last first-game win was a 22-8 conquest of Trona, Calif. Since then, PVHS is 0-12. That streak started with a 31-7 loss to Mouat, Canada.

The 1997 Maroon-and-Gold has lost to Beatty; that Hornet team went on to win the state Class 2-A championship.

Since then, the Trojans have lost:

* 34-22 to Las Vegas Mojave;

* 35-6 to Trona, which was 5-2 in season openers against the Trojans;

* 27-6 to Class 2-A power Las Vegas The Meadows;

* 28-23 to Lucerne Valley, Calif.;

* 18-13 to Las Vegas Faith Lutheran (which had played an 8-8 with PVHS in the 1985 opener. That tie is one of only two in Trojans' football history. The other occurred last season, when Pahrump Valley rallied to tie Yucca Valley, Calif., 34-34.

* 27-13 to Faith Lutheran;

* 30-22 to Spring Creek, led by Class 3-A all-state running back James Edwards;

* 30-15 to Spring Creek;

* 40-0 to Class 4-A Las Vegas Chaparral, and

* 24-20 to Phoenix (Ariz.) Christian.

Pahrump Valley's first football win ever came in the 1974 opener, when the Trojans defeated Boulder City's Junior Varsity, 24-22. PVHS was in Class A, while the Eagles were in Class 2-A. In their inaugural season (1973), the Trojans were 0-8, with the campaign starting with a 50-0 loss to Mesquite Virgin Valley.

Pahrump Valley's other first-game victories were against Virgin Valley (20-8 in 1977 and 16-6 in 1978), Pahranagat Valley Alamo (6-0 in 1980), Lincoln County (21-6 in 1982 and 33-6 in 1983) and Trona (10-7 in 1990 and 20-7 in 1993).

Pahrump Valley is winless in its last 10 starts; the Trojans were 0-8-1 in 2007, after losing 20-10 in the 2006 Southern Nevada Class 3-A playoffs to Overton Moapa Valley. The Trojans were 3-7 in 2006, with a 34-14 conquest of Boulder City in a league game their last victory.

Leo Verzilli is the 12th coach in PVHS football history. Hank Wohle directed the Trojans in their inaugural season (1973). In succession, the other coaches were:

* Richard Travis (2-16 in 1974-75),

* Al Giannotti (29-21, 1976-1981; 1978 team lost to Pershing County Lovelock in state finals;

* Dave Hare (7-18, 1982-1984);

* Larry Goins (19-48-1, 1985-1992);

* Gary Findley (20-26, 1993-1997);

* Scott Dean (0-9, 1998);

* Jeff Skelton (5-12, 1999-2000);

* Steve Nygaard (17-29, 2001-2005; won league title in 2005);

* Brian Hug, 3-11 in 2006-2007; Roy Goodell 0-4-1 in 2007).
