Heath Campbell is taking advantage of the very popular skill of rock-climbing on an artificial rock as a business venture.

Learning the skill of rock climbing is not something one might wish to do on a 100-foot rock wall in the middle of nowhere, so many individuals are now using artificial walls for their entertainment and to improve their skills in a safer environment.

He became interested in starting the business after seeing one setup in Bullhead City, Ariz. Campbell said, "It's something the whole family can do together. Providing this opportunity helps me give back to the community."

His wall has the advantage of being mobile, thereby enhancing the ability to move its location from one event to another, whereas the climber would normally have to go to a location in nature to enjoy the sport.

Campbell's is one of two businesses of this type that cover all of Southern Nevada.

Campbell will put on well-planned fundraisers, as well as other events. He recently did the National Children's Day event and has worked private parties in Las Vegas and other areas. He also sponsors organizations such as the PVHS Booster Club.

He only charges $5 for two successful climbs; party and event prices range from $175 to $200.

He plans to further enhance his business by obtaining the newer Red Rock model, which is a different color and allows the climber to move the handholds around to increase or decrease the level of difficulty.

Campbell's current wall is 28 feet high and allows room for four climbers at a time. For set-up, a space 30 feet long and 10 feet wide is required. The auto belay system is from Spectrum Sports, and is the only true redundant belay system. It's great for special events. The wall is fully insured and a certificate of insurance is available on request.

Campbell said, "People are attached by a cable that uses hydraulics to keep secure. Even those that are afraid of heights have learned to use it, and even look forward to it."

Set-up takes only 15 minutes.

"Each rock can be interchanged making the difficulty depend on the climber," said Campbell.

Campbell is a native of Pahrump and a Navy veteran; he is looking to offer Pahrump another opportunity for young people to find alternative entertainment as well as giving them the opportunity to discover a talent.

It would also provide a means for former military personnel to stay in shape or challenge each other.

In addition to his wife, Irais, Campbell is looking for new investors or sponsors.
