The Class 4-A era in Pahrump Valley High School athletics begins Friday, with Lady Trojan soccer and volleyball teams playing in tournaments at Reno and Las Vegas.

See related story on PVHS cross country, this page.

The soccer team will open the season at 3 p.m. Friday against Reno Bishop Manogue in the Howell Memorial Invitational tournament, at Reno.

Galena is the host team for the tournament, to be played at the South Valleys Sports Complex, located at 15650 Wedge Parkway (between ArrowCreek Parkway and Mt. Rose Highway in South Reno).

The Lady Trojans, coached by Greg Leseberg, will play again Friday, taking on Sparks Spanish Springs at 6 p.m.

On Saturday, Pahrump Valley concludes Flight B play against Douglas Minden at 10 a.m.

Bracket games start at 2 p.m.

Entered in the girls tournament are Carson, Reno McQueen, Incline and Reno Wooster (Flight A), South Tahoe, Reno, North Tahoe and Zephyr Cove Whittell (Flight C) and Galena, Sparks Reed, Truckee (Calif.) and Fernley (Flight D).

In the boys' tournament are McQueen, Douglas, Incline, Spanish Springs, South Tahoe, Galena, Truckee, Reed, Carson, Manogue, Fernley, Reno and Reno North Valleys.

The games against Douglas, Spanish Springs and Manogue will be the only action against Class 4-A teams this fall for the Lady Trojans, who will compete for Southern Nevada Class 3-A honors. There is still a suit pending in federal court concerning girls soccer in the south.

The Lady Trojans will play at Mesquite Virgin Valley Sept. 4 (2:30 p.m.) and at home against Overton Moapa Valley Sept. 9 (2:30 p.m.).

Going to Reno will be seniors Brittany Brown, Corisso Butland, Stephanie Ledford, Crystal Lopez, Lauren Luna, Christina Maples and Samantha Sposato, each a returning player from the 2007 team that advanced to the Southern Nevada Class 3-A regional finals.

Also on the traveling team will be Dana Ayala, Melissa Ewing, Katelyn Foss, Janet Garcia and Shelby Hughes.

Also Brianna Milk, Leanne Morrow, Sara Moser, Angelica Musumeci and Haley Williams.

Frank Lopez and Cissy Phillips are the assistant coaches.

* Coach Jill Harris's volleyball team, which made a strong showing in some exhibition matches at an officials workshop last weekend at Henderson Coronado, will play at Las Vegas High School Friday and Saturday.

Pahrump Valley is in Pool D, with Class 4-A Palo Verde and Las Vegas and Bountiful, Utah. Pahrump Valley will play Bountiful at 4 p.m. At 5, PVHS will take on Palo Verde and at 7, the Trojans will face Las Vegas.

Teams will be divided into championship and consolation pools for Saturday's competition, which begins at 8 a.m. Other tournament sites are Las Vegas Harney Middle School, Henderson Green Valley High School and Henderson Foothill High School.

Which girls will take the trip to Las Vegas was to be determined today.

* Pahrump Valley's boys' team was to compete in the JZ3 tournament hosted by Las Vegas Bishop Gorman this weekend, but that event was canceled because the Clark County School District did not arrange for bus transportation for competing teams, according to reliable sources.

Which means coach Gene Smith's team will open its first Class 4-A season at home Tuesday against Henderson Liberty at 3 p.m.

On Sept. 4, the Trojans will go to Centennial (3 p.m.) and on Sept. 8, Pahrump Valley will play its first Sunset Region Southwest Division game at Clark (3 p.m.).

*Pahrump Valley's girls golf team will host its former Southern Nevada Class 3-A League rivals at Mountain Falls Thursday, starting at 11 a.m.
