Tonopah at Carlin Thursday

Tonopah travels to Carlin Thursday and Pahrump Valley goes to Las Vegas Mountain View Christian Saturday, to start the 2008 football season for Nye County schools.

The defending state 1-A eight-man champion Muckers defeated the Railroaders 54-20 in the state finals at Reno in November.

Pahrump Valley, which will play in the 4-A Sunset Region Southwest Division this season, goes to Las Vegas Saturday to play 2-A Mountain View Christian. The Saints, a major 1-A power for the last few years, moves up to the Southern 2-A League this season. Kickoff is at 4:30 p.m.

In other Friday games, it will be Sandy Valley at Henderson International, Spring Mountain at Lund, Lincoln County at Parowan (Utah) and Pahranagat Valley Alamo at Wells.

Nye County team Round Mountain will host Mineral County Hawthorne, Las Vegas Agassi Prep will play at Diamond Ranch (Utah) and Ely White Pine travels to Milford (Utah).

Overton Moapa Valley will be at home against Fernley in an intrastate 3-A contest, while Mesquite Virgin Valley will host Enterprise (Utah).

In the greater Las Vegas area, it will be Eldorado at Arbor View, Boulder City at Henderson Basic, Canyon Springs at Spring Valley, Durango at Centennial, Valley at Del Sol, Dixie (St. George, Utah) at Cimarron-Memorial, and Las Vegas at Douglas Minden.

Desert Oasis, a new Las Vegas High School, will open at 2-A The Meadows.

Also, Fountain Valley (Calif.) at Henderson Foothill, Bonanza at Henderson Green Valley, Rancho at Liberty, Reno at Palo Verde, Chaparral at Shadow Ridge, Desert Pine at Silverado,

Nevada's high school football season got underway at the University of Phoenix Stadium Saturday, with Las Vegas Bishop Gorman losing 16-6 to Brophy Prep.

The game was the Sollenberger Classic and matched the Class 4-A Nevada champion Gaels against 5-A Arizona kingpin Brophy Prep.

Gael quarterback John Huber ran 79 yards for a touchdown in the first period, but the Nevadans netted just 125 yards in the game dominated by Brophy.

Tight end A.J. Steimel caught an eight-yard touchdown pass with less than a minute left in the game. Brophy ended the Gaels' last possession with an interception at the Gorman 30.

Brophy got a safety and a five-yard touchdown run by Max Leonesio in the first half. Alex Groutte booted the point-after.
