Hawaii wins Little League World Series

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- Tanner Tokunaga slugged two home runs as West Waipahu, Hawaii scored in every inning to defeat Matamoros, Mexico, 12-3 in the Little League World Series championship game Sunday, at Lamade Stadium here.

The West regional champion Hawaiians had advanced to the title game Saturday, when they scored six sixth-inning runs to rally past Lake Charles, La., 7-5 in the United States finals.

Against Mexico, Hawaii led 4-3 after three innings, but added three runs in the fourth, four in the fifth and one in the sixth to run away to the championship. The Hawaiians had 11 hits, including two by Pikai Winchester.

A crowd of 28,500 watched the World Series finale, nationally televised by ABC.

Hawaii defeated New England Shelton, Conn., 3-1, Midwest Rapid City, S.D, 6-4, Southeast Tampa, Fla., 10-2, Northwest Mill Creek, Wash., 9-4 and Southwest Lake Charles, La., 7-5.

Mexico stopped Europe Emilia, Italy 12-0, Asia-Pacific Yona, Guam, 10-0 and Caribbean Willemsted, Curacao, 6-2, as well as Latin America Maracaibo, Venezuela, 5-2 and Japan Tokyo 5-4 to move through the tournament, which started Aug. 15.
