Pahrump Valley's cross country team is practicing for its first meet -- The Las Vegas Labor Day Classic -- at Palo Verde High School in Las Vegas Aug. 30.

Beatty and Round Mountain will compete in the Lady Trojan Volleyball Invitational at Pahrump Valley High School Aug. 29-30.

The Hornets and Knights are among eight teams to compete in the volleyball marathon in the PVHS gym.

In Pool A are Beatty, Las Vegas Calvary Chapel, Lake Mead Christian Academy and the host PVHS Junior Varsity. Loy Koeller has replaced Mike Duszynski as the Lady Hornets' coach.

(The Pahrump Valley varsity will be in the Las Vegas Invitational Aug. 29-30.)

Round Mountain will be in Pool B along with Pahranagat Valley Alamo, Henderson International School and Laughlin.

Tonopah is not entered in this tournament. The Lady Muckers play at Carlin at 11 a.m. Aug. 29, then travel to Ely for the White Pine Invitational later that day. The Ely tournament ends Aug. 30.

The top two in each pool advance to the Gold Division brackets. The third- and fourth-place teams go onto the Maroon Division brackets.

Saturday's bracket play starts at 9 a.m.

Gold Division pairings:

Game A, 9 a.m. -- Pool A No. 1 vs. Pool B No. 2

Game B, 10 a.m. -- Pool B No. 1 vs. Pool A No. 2

Game C, 11 a.m. -- Losers of Games A and B

Game D, 12:15 p.m. -- Winners of Games A and B.

Game E, 1:15 p.m. -- Loser Game D vs. Winner Game C

Game F, 2:15 p.m. -- Championship Round begins.

Maroon Division pairings:

Game G, 9 a.m. -- Pool A No. 3 vs. Pool B No. 4

Game H, 10 a.m. -- Pool B No. 3 vs. Pool A No. 4

Game I, 11 a.m. -- Losers of Games G and H.

Game J, 12:15 p.m. -- Winners of Games G and H.

Game K, 1:15 p.m. -- Loser Game J vs. Winner Game I.

Game L, 2:15 p.m. -- Championship Round begins.

Championship matches will be best 3-of-5. All others are best 2-of-3.

All matches will be contested in the PVHS gym.

Pahrump Valley's varsity team is one of 40 teams in the prestigious Las Vegas Invitational Aug. 29-30.

The Trojans will play at Las Vegas High School in Pool D, which includes Palo Verde, Bountiful (Utah) and the host Wildcats.

Coach Jill Harris's team will play Bountiful at 4 p.m., Palo Verde at 5 p.m. and Las Vegas at 7 p.m. Aug. 29.

On Aug. 30, teams will be divided into championship and consolation pools, with every one to compete in at least three more matches, starting at 8 a.m.

Sunrise Region Southwest Division Class 4-A teams in the tournament include Bishop Gorman, Sierra Vista, Durango, Bonanza and Desert Oasis.

Las Vegas Faith Lutheran and Overton Moapa Valley are the only Class 3-A teams entered.

Matches will be played at Las Vegas High School, Harney Middle School, Green Valley High School and Foothill High School.

Pairings have not yet been announced for the soccer tournament at Galena High School in Reno, to be played Aug. 29-30. Pahrump Valley's girls, coached by Greg Leseberg, are entered in that event.

The JZ3 boys' soccer tournament, scheduled Aug. 29-30 at Bishop Gorman, has been canceled. Pahrump Valley, directed by coach Gene Smith, was to compete in that tournament.

Pahrump Valley cross country coach Andy Andersen plans to stage a 5K run Sept. 27, during the Fall Festival, as a fundraiser for the Trojans' boys and girls teams and the PVHS athletics department.

The race is tentatively scheduled to start at 7 a.m. on Betty Ave., east of Highway 160, north of Home Depot. Complete details are to be announced.

Pahrump Valley's girls golf team, coached by Julie Floyd, will open the season at Mountain Falls Thursday, with Southern Nevada Class 3-A League teams Faith Lutheran, Boulder City, Virgin Valley and Moapa Valley slated to compete, starting at 11 a.m.

Beatty's football team, working out under the direction of coach Brian Hayes, will play its opener Sept. 5 at home against Beaver Dam, Ariz. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
