Pahrump Valley High School is moving into Class 4-A, as a result of the latest realignment plan announced by the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association.

Trojan athletic teams moved into Class 3-A in 1996, when the NIAA re-established four classifications.

In Pahrump Valley's first 13 years as a high school, the Trojans were in the Southern 1-A League from 1973-74 through 1980-81 and in the 2-A league from 1981-83 through 1985-86. In the 1986-87 school year, Pahrump Valley returned to Class A.

When the Trojans were in 2-A, the high school averaged about 270 students per year; Elko, in stark contrast, had more than 750.

How did Pahrump Valley teams fare in its first eight years in Class A? How did that compare to the Trojans' four-year stay in Class 2-A?

* In football, the Trojans were 29-38, including a 9-1 run in 1978, when they lost 18-0 to Pershing County Lovelock in the state finals.

From 1981 through 1984, PVHS was 9-24 in football, including an 0-8 season in 1984.

* In boys basketball, PVHS was 91-80. In 2-A, the Trojans were 33-46 and did not have a .500 or better season.

* In baseball, the Trojans were 71-47. From 1981-82 through 1985-86, PVHS was 68-27; in the 1983 season, the Trojans were 22-5 and advanced to the state 2-A finals.

* In volleyball, PVHS was 69-27 and won state titles in 1976-77 and 1980-81.

From 1981-82 through 1984-85, Pahrump Valley was 71-12 and claimed 2-A state championships in 1982-83 and 1983-84.

The Trojans returned to 1-A in the 1985-86 school year and won a school-record 29 (of 32) matches. In 1986-87, PVHS was 23-10, boosting the Lady Trojans' 12-year record to 192-52, with four state championships.

* In girls 1-A basketball, the Trojans were 101-15, with state championships in 1976-77, 1978-79, 1979-80 and 1980-81.

From 1981-82 through 1985-86, PV girls basketball teams were 56-27, including an 18-5 record in 1984-85. The 1985-86 team, back in 1-A, finished 20-8 and in PVHS's first 13 years, the Trojans were 191-60 with four Nevada championships.

* Pahrump Valley did not have girls' softball until the 1981-82 school year, when the Trojans moved into Class 2-A. In their four seasons in 2-A, the Lady Trojans were 52-19, including an 18-5 record in 1984-85.

In 13 years of volleyball, basketball and softball, PVHS girls teams were a cumulative 454-150, with only two under-.500 records (4-9 in volleyball in 1977-78 and 7-11 in softball in 1986-87).
