Bishop Gorman advances to World Series

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Las Vegas Bishop Gorman defeated Honolulu 7-3 Monday, to win the Western Regional title in American Legion baseball here Monday.

The Gaels, 70-7-1, will play Central Plains regional winner Omaha, Neb, 40-16, at 7 a.m. PDT Friday at Shelby, N.C.

Gorman was undefeated in four games going into the clash with Honolulu, 3-1 in the regionals, contested at the Surprise Sports Complex here.

The Gaels defeated Tucson 10-6; Niwot, Colo., 9-2; Honolulu 14-4 and Taylorsville, Utah, 8-4 enroute to the finals.

Honolulu's wins were against Covina, Calif., 14-4; Anthem, Ariz., 9-1, and Albuquerque, N.M., 8-4.

The Legion World Series will start Friday at Keeter Stadium -- where more than 5,000 fans watched host Shelby lose 4-3 to Sumter, S.C., in the Southeast Finals Sunday -- and Veterans Field. The Southeast regionals drew more than 33,000 fans to the five-day event.
