Library calendar

Free computer instruction is available for beginning-level computer users Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Sign-up in person available at the library.

Classes are: "Basic Computer," "Beyond Basics," "Advanced Basics," and "Genealogy." Check at the library for dates and times.

Shakespeare Made Simple will be held 10 a.m.-noon the 3rd Saturday of each month, Tuesdays 4-6 p.m., is Shakespeare Readers' Theatre. Both are free and open to all ages.

Beginning Aug. 4 through Aug. 30, the library will be accepting new school supplies for the Annual School Supply Drive. All items collected will be distributed by Pahrump area schools. Help support our valley's students.

Movie Day will be Saturday, Aug. 23. The feature is "Nim's Island" (rated PG). Admission is free.

Blood drive

The Pahrump Valley Cruisers will hold a blood drive 4-8 p.m., Friday, Sept. 5 and 8 a.m.-1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 6 at the Bob Ruud Community Center.

Friends of the Library meet

The Friends of the Pahrump Library will hold a meeting at 9:15 a.m. Sept. 6 in the library.

The guest speaker will be Gail Martin, renowned author of Christian novels.

Ice cream social

Nevada Outreach Training Organization and No To Abuse will have an ice cream social 1-3 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 7 at the Bob Ruud Community Center.

Ice cream with sprinkles for everyone and door prizes awarded to a winning ticket.

The event is free to all Pahrump citizens as a way of saying thank you for your support of our organization.

7th annual Car and Truck Show

Tumbleweed Tavern and Horizon Markets will sponsor the 7th annual Car and Truck Show Sept. 13.

Last minute registration begins at 8 a.m.

There will be oldies music with a live DJ, raffles, vehicle judging and an awards presentation.

Anyone interested in a vendor booth or early car registration should call 727-4100 in advance.

The event benefits First Choice Pregnancy Center Education Program.

P.O.S.S. Schedule

The Pahrump Open Schooling Show dates are:

Sept. 13, 6 p.m. and Oct. 25, 9 a.m.

Shows are held Saturdays at McCullough Arena.

Awards will go to first place, ribbons will go to 1st through 5th.

High point for the day will be awarded and youth high point at year-end. PAC and OCAP approved.

Pahrump Film Festival

The 2nd annual Pahrump Film Festival will be held Sept. 6 at Red Sky BBQ.

Two new movies will premiere: "Demon Haunt" by Ted V. Mikels and "Dorks on the Moon" by Harvey Caplan.

Church yard sale

Faith Fellowship is holding a yard sale to dispose of surplus furniture, bookcases, cabinets and other donated items.

Masonic family day

The Masons will have a family get-together at 5 p.m. Aug. 23 at the Masonic Temple, 281 E. Gemini Drive.

All Masons and their families are invited.

Religious education

Our Lady of the Valley Roman Catholic Church has begun registration for Youth Faith Formation.

Hafen Elementary registration

Hafen Elementary will be registering students everyday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Parents should bring up to date shot records, birth certificate, proof of residence (electric bill, mortgage receipt, etc.), any custody papers pertaining to the student and parent photo ID. Students entering kindergarten must be 5 years old before September 30, 2008.

Hafen Elementary open house

New Student/Parent orientation will be 6- 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20 in the multi-purpose room.

Class lists will be posted on the outside window on Friday, Aug. 22.

Missed economic stimulus package

During the Federal Income Tax season, the Pahrump Tax Aid group offered free tax service to people of the community.

They have been advised that many persons in the Pahrump area are eligible for the ESP, but have not filed.

The Pahrump Tax Aides will offer services to correct this on the last two Fridays of August (22, 29) and Sept. 5 at the Bob Ruud Community Center.

The Pahrump Arts Council will hold a general membership meeting 9:30 a.m.-noon Aug. 23 at the Pahrump Community Library.

There is a lot of news and a chance to meet the new members and committee coordinators as well as the new board.

The UNCE Master Gardeners will accept contest registration for the Pahrump Fall Festival "Giant Pumpkin Contest" until 5 p.m. Aug. 29.

Dress-up tea party

Pahrump Valley United Methodist Church will hold a dress-up tea party for young girls ages 5-12.

The party is 2-5 p.m. Aug. 30 at the church, 1300 E. Highway 372.

Hats, fancy dresses, jewelry, gloves, shoes and other accessories will be provided for the girls to use.

A craft project and a manners lesson is on the agenda.

Seating is limited and reservations must be made by Aug. 27.

NOTO needs volunteers

The Nevada Outreach Training Organization needs volunteers for the following positions: Intake Clerk/Receptionist and Food Pantry Worker.

Applicants for Intake Clerk/Receptionist must have excellent people skills, phone skills, be able to write legibly, maintain phone logs and complete forms accurately and completely.

Applicants for Food Pantry Worker must be able to assist with inventories, read food labels and expiration dates, physically be able to stoop, bend and stretch and carry 25-30 pounds for short distances. The ability to operate a hand truck or dolly for heavier loads is necessary and monthly travel to Beatty, Tonopah, Amargosa Valley and other Nye County locations may be required.

NOTO is also in need of seasonal help to package food baskets for Thanksgiving and Christmas and "elves" to assist with Toys for Tots which is being coordinated by the Pahrump Family Resource Center this year.

Art in the Park 2008

The event dates for Art in the Park are 9-5 p.m. Oct. 4 and 5.

Pahrump Computer Users

The Pahrump Computer Users group meets at 1 p.m. Sept. 15 in the large conference room of the Pahrump Community Library.

This month's program will be "Building a Web site from scratch" in a step-by-step presentation by Mike Erwin.

The meeting schedule for October will be 1 p.m. Oct. 13 and the schedule for November will be 1 p.m. Nov. 3. Please note the changes.

The meeting is free and open to the public.

Military soldiers and families

"The Ladies Network: Making a Difference," would like to meet U.S. military active soldiers and their families, to find out more about supporting the troops.
