School board election has candidates re-running
By CHRISTINA EICHELKRAUT
Nye County voters will experience a bit of electoral déjá vu come November when they find themselves having to decide -- for a second time -- who they want as their Nye County School District Board of Trustee representatives. Nye County Clerk Sam Merlino reportedly admitted to making a mistake when reading the election law. Merlino was under the impression nonpartisan races between two or be fewer candidates were to placed on the primary ballot in some counties in order to reduce the length of the general election ballot. The two races in question are the Area II race, in which incumbent J.E. "Doc" McNeely ran against Kathleen Bienenstein, and the Area IV race, in which incumbent Harold Tokerud ran against Courtland H. Ofelt. McNeely and Tokerud won the primary according to the final vote tally, but their respective victories didn't last long. Once Merlino realized the mistake that had been made, she immediately reported it to state election officials. One advantage to the mishap, however, is that it gives the candidates an idea of the challenge they face in the coming months. Both Tokerud's and McNeely's primary "victories" were decisive -- McNeely garnered 54 percent of the vote over Bienenstein and Tokerud finished with 67 percent over Ofelt. The accidental opinion poll has apparently spurred Ofelt to campaign more vigorously in the coming months. |
