Allen pleads out, ordered to perform community service
By CHRISTINA EICHELKRAUT
Sharron Lee Allen, the former president of the For Love of Cats and Kittens, or FLOCK, sanctuary here, received a suspended 30-day jail sentence and 40 hours of community service for agreeing to plead guilty to one misdemeanor charge relating to animal cruelty and neglect. The terms of the agreement were worked out in Pahrump Justice Court Thursday afternoon. Allen had originally pleaded not guilty to the 13 animal cruelty and neglect charges she faced after animal control officers removed more than 100 cats from her residence in August 2007. Authorities maintained the cats were found in ill health and dirty conditions, but Allen maintained that was untrue and the state of both her home and the seized animals had been exaggerated by the media. Allen's lawyer told Justice of the Peace Tina Brisebell her client would prefer to do community service with a veterinary clinic or animal shelter and was willing to travel to Las Vegas. Brisebill, however, said she would prefer Allen's community service be done in Pahrump and asked the crowded courtroom if anyone in the gallery could offer Allen a job in which she could fulfill her community service sentence. As luck would have it, a representative from Spay and Neuter All Pets and Strays (SNAPS) was present and said Allen could volunteer with their organization. Allen's home will also be subject to random inspections by the Nye County Animal Control office. Although Allen asked for 48 hours notice prior to an inspection, Brisebill said three hours should be plenty of time. "You can do a world of good in 48 hours," Brisebill said. "I want to have a real inspection." Allen is not facing charges in relation to the For Love of Cats and Kittens sanctuary that had to be turned over to the Best Friends Animal Society last summer. She resigned as president of the FLOCK executive board and director of the sanctuary approximately six weeks prior to over 400 cats being found there sick, starving, dehydrated or all of the above. The executive board of FLOCK is facing 17 charges relating to animal neglect and one charge of further engaging in acts of animal cruelty. |
