Goldfield Days events update
By B.L. MCLAUGHLIN
The schedule for Goldfield Days, as of Aug. 10, includes a few special additions, beginning with the presentation at the community center on Friday morning of a million-dollar check for the purpose of treating the town's water supply. Friday, Casino Night will begin at 7 p.m. and will include opportunities to play blackjack, poker, or faro -- a game very popular in the Old West. A silent auction, will be taking place during the evening, and food will be available. Saturday, parade setup will begin at 7:45 a.m., with signing in at the Rock Motel. Starting at 8 a.m., Goldfield's Masonic Lodge will put on a breakfast at the Old Firehouse on Main Street. Child ID cards will be available. At 9 a.m., the parade will begin. It will head through downtown Goldfield on Route 95. The highway will be closed during the parade. The famous Goldfield Days land auction will start after the parade, at about 10 a.m. on the back steps of the courthouse. A tour of the historic courthouse will be given after the auction. Starting at 11 a.m., kids' games, "tattooing," and helium balloons will be offered at the Yucca Mountain office. At 11:30 a.m., the very popular bus tours of Historic Goldfield will begin, starting from the Cook Bank building, across from the Northern Saloon. A Liars Contest will take place next to the Northern Saloon & Restaurant at 1 p.m. All liars are invited to enter. New this year is moon-and-star-gazing after dark. An expert with a telescope will be waiting for 'gazers near the hotel. Meanwhile, back at the community center, a host of stellar performances will punctuate the afternoon, starting with Beautiful Belly Dancing at 12:30 p.m. After the performance, two handmade lap blankets will be auctioned off -- one for the chamber of commerce, and one for the historical society. At 1 p.m., the Lady Clown will perform, followed by a second performance of Beautiful Belly Dancing at 2 p.m. A Western Poetry Reading is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. and again at 4 p.m. The second performance will be followed by a silent auction. The final event of the day at the community center will be a performance by the wonderful Old Time Fiddlers Association from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday's ultimate event will be a street dance, starting at 8 p.m. by the Northern Saloon. The featured band, the fabulous Diamondback Band, will play and sing, courtesy of Ruth Anderson, owner of the Northern. Sunday morning will begin with a pet parade, starting at the Goldfield Hotel, at 8:30 a.m. At 10 a.m. the Old Time Fiddlers will perform their finale at the community center. Kids' games will again be available at the Yucca Mountain office, beginning at 10:30 a.m. For those interested in a restoration in progress, a tour of the old High School is offered at 11 a.m. |
