A fire broke out at the Pahrump Valley Disposal dump on East Mesquite Avenue Sunday evening at approximately 7 p.m.

According to Scott Lewis, fire chief, the Pahrump Valley Fire Rescue Service arrived at the dump to find a 100-square-foot fire burning atop a rubbish pile approximately 70 feet high.

The rescue workers immediately engaged in a "blitz attack," quashing the flames and working to contain it.

A bulldozer was used after the fire was extinguished to determine just how deep the fire burned.

Due to the material in the dump, Lewis said there was no way to determine what may have caused it.

"There's a lot of household items there, it could've been something dropped off earlier in the day," Lewis said.
