Mt. Charleston Elementary registration

Mt. Charleston Elementary School will hold registration for new students 8-3 p.m. beginning the week of Monday, Aug. 18.

Bring a copy of the student's original birth certificate, up-to-date immunization records (new requirements Hepatitis A and B are state requirements), verification of address (utility bill), parent or guardian photo ID, student Social Security card and last report card or transcript if possible.

In order for your child to start kindergarten, your child(ren) must turn five-years-old by Sept. 30.

Class lists with teacher name and room number will be posted outside the school office after 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22.

Early Childhood and grades 1-5 begins Monday, Aug. 25, and Kindergarten begins Thursday, Aug. 28.

Supply lists for all grades K-5 will be available at the local businesses.

Caregiver training

Nathan Adelson Hospice will provide a two-day training workshop to teach individuals how to become a caregiver in a health care or nursing home environment.

The workshop is scheduled for 8-4 p.m. Aug. 18 and 19. Reservations must be made no later than Aug. 15.

Mt. Charleston kindergarten orientation

Mt. Charleston Elementary School will hold a special orientation for "new" parents. A tour of the school along with a question and answer session will take place from 9-10 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 20, in the Mt. Charleston multi-purpose room.

Kindergarten students will be pre-assessed starting Monday, Aug. 25- 27. Times are assigned during registration. Kindergarten starts on Thursday, Aug. 28.

Library Calendar

Free computer instruction is available for beginning-level computer users are Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Sign-up in person available at the library.

Classes are: "Basic Computer," "Beyond Basics," "Advanced Basics," and "Genealogy." Check at the library for dates and times.

Shakespeare Made Simple will be held 10 a.m.-noon the 3rd Saturday of each month, Tuesdays 4-6 p.m., is Shakespeare Readers' Theatre Both are free and open to all ages.

Beginning Aug. 4 through Aug. 30, the library will be accepting new school supplies for the Annual School Supply Drive. All items collected will be distributed by Pahrump area schools. Help support our valley's students.

The Favorite Authors Book Club will meet at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 19, This month's author is Carole Nelson Douglas. Read anything by Douglas and enjoy a lively discussion. New members always welcome.

The Pahrump Anime Club will hold its regular meeting 12-4 p.m. Aug. 16. Showings this month will be: 12 noon, Gunparade March # 5-6 ( Sub-Titled); 1 p.m., Inuyasha # 4-6 (English); 2 p.m., Chobits # 3 (English); 2:30 p.m., Devil May Cry # 5 (Sub-Titled); and 3 p.m., Ragnarok # 1-2 (English). The Pahrump Open Schooling Show dates are:

Sept. 13, 6 p.m. and Oct. 25, 9 a.m.

Shows are held Saturdays at McCullough Arena.

Awards will go to first place, ribbons will go to 1st through 5th.

Nominations for the Teacher of the Year award are being collected between Aug. 8 and 17 at Wal-Mart.

The box will be located in the lobby of the grocery side front entrance.

The award committee will be looking for a teacher who has made a difference in a student's life.

The winning teacher will receive $1000 check for their school and entrance into the state competition.

Toastmasters Club 1970

Toastmasters Club 1970 will be hosting a training session for club officers 6:30-8 p.m. Aug. 8 at 3250 S. Highway 160, Suite 11, Community Bank Plaza offices of Realty Executives.

Donations for Quilts for Cancer

Quilts for Cancer volunteers have worked all year to make Christmas stockings for home bound seniors in Pahrump. Two hundred plus stockings need to be filled with nutritious snacks.

Volunteers are also working to have a hand-made gift to accompany the stocking which will be distributed in December.

Shakespeare made simple

The Pahrump Community Library and the Tumbleweed Tales Society are sponsoring two workshops for Shakespeare fans.

"Shakespeare Readers Theater" will be 4:30-6 p.m. every Tuesday at the library, where the group reads and discusses Shakespeare's work.

"Shakespeare Made Simple" is 10 a.m.-noon every third Saturday of the month.

PVHS registration

Pahrump Valley High School began registration Monday, Aug. 4.

Enrollment packages may be picked up 8-2 p.m. Monday through Friday.

To expedite the enrollment process, please bring a copy of a birth certificate, Social Security card, immunization records, parent or guardian photo ID, two proofs of residency such as utility bills or a bank statement and last report card or transcript.

Counselors will begin scheduling on Aug. 18, no appointment is necessary.

Free back-to-school haircuts

Family Affair Hair Salon, is having a back-to-school benefit 7-11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 16, at 421 Frontage Road.

The salon will be offering free haircuts for under privileged children. Various sponsors have donated school supplies that will be given to the children.

Free massage for walk-a-thon

Angels Have Wheels

All Medicare recipients should now be aware that if they suffer from conditions such as arthritis, cardiovascular disease and respiratory disorders and have difficulty walking or propelling a standard wheelchair, they may be eligible to receive an electric wheelchair paid for by Medicare.

Power wheelchairs

The Senior Wheels USA program makes power wheelchairs available to senior citizens and the permanently disabled at no cost to recipients if they qualify.

Power wheelchairs are provided to those who can no longer walk or self-propel a manual wheelchair and who meet the additional guidelines of the program. No deposit is required.

Retired/senior program

The Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteers need help.

This program enables the elderly to stay in their homes by assisting with daily maintenance such as shopping, medical appointments, etc.

RSVP reimburses volunteers 24 cents per mile up to $20 per month and carries worker's compensation and excess auto liability on all volunteers.

Additionally, volunteers receive training, annual seminar education and appreciation award dinners.

NOTO needs volunteers

The Nevada Outreach Training Organization needs volunteers for the following positions: Intake Clerk/Receptionist and Food Pantry Worker.

Applicants for Intake Clerk/Receptionist must have excellent people skills, phone skills, be able to write legibly, maintain phone logs and complete forms accurately and completely.

Applicants for Food Pantry Worker must be able to assist with inventories, read food labels and expiration dates, physically be able to stoop, bend and stretch and carry 25-30 pounds for short distances. The ability to operate a hand truck or dolly for heavier loads is necessary and monthly travel to Beatty, Tonopah, Amargosa Valley and other Nye County locations may be required.

NOTO is also in need of seasonal help to package food baskets for Thanksgiving and Christmas and "elves" to assist with Toys for Tots which is being coordinated by the Pahrump Family Resource Center this year.

VFW in August

The VFW hosts a swap meet the 2nd Sunday of each month 7-3 p.m. on the VFW grounds. Reservations for a spot are $7 if you bring your own table and $10 if you rent one from the VFW.
