WORLD EXTREME CAGEFIGHTING Cantwell floors Stann, wins titlePAHRUMP NATIVE A CHAMPIONSPECIAL TO THE PVT
LAS VEGAS -- Revenge is best served with some solid punches to the head. On March 24, 2007, Brian Stann knocked out Steven Cantwell just 41 seconds into the first round of a World Extreme Cagefighting light heavyweight match. Sunday night, Cantwell, who grew up in Pahrump and runs a kickboxing academy that operates out of the Pahrump Valley High School wrestling room, got even. In a championship bout contested at the Hard Rock Hotel, Cantwell punished the WEC champion, who couldn't withstand the punishment of several hard punches late in the second round and fell to the mat. The bout was stopped after 4:01, giving Cantwell his fourth win in five bouts. Stann is now 6-1. Stann, a 6-foot-5 slugger, weighed in at 201 pounds; The 21-year-old Cantwell, a 6-2 strongman, tipped the scales at 205 pounds. In a post-bout interview, Cantwell told reporters, "I was surprised with how much punishment he took." Cantwell studied under MuayThai master Nick Blomgren and Brazilian jiu-jitsu champion Ricardo Cavalcanti. He holds a black sash in MauyThai kick boxing and a purple belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. MuayThai kick boxing is "stand-up fighting" including techniques of boxing, kicking, knees, and elbows. Brazilian jiu-jitsu is described as "ultimate ground fighting and submission wrestling, including arm bars and choke holds." Cantwell's previous wins include technical knockouts of Justin McElfresh and Tim McKenzie. Cantwell, who lives in Las Vegas, established his academy in Pahrump a couple years ago. He gives private lessons; offered are kids kickboxing, adult kickboxing, adult jiu-jitsu, and kids jiu-jitsu, with the academy open on Monday nights, Friday nights and Saturday mornings. An open mat is available Sundays. For more information on the WEC, go to the Web site, www.ufc.com. |
