A ball of flames rose Thursday afternoon on the north end as dried brush was ignited.

Approximately 10 acres were engulfed in flames Thursday as the result of a fire started in a mesquite grove at Simkins Road and Leslie Street.

The fire began at approximately 5:30 p.m.

A suspect in relation to the fire was identified by the deputy state fire marshal, with assistance from the Nye County Sheriff's Office, Fire Chief Scott Lewis said.

There were no injuries and no buildings were harmed by the flames.

The fire burned for over an hour as the Pahrump Valley Fire Rescue Service, Bureau of Land Management firefighters and Department of Forestry workers attempted to confine the flames and keep them from spreading.

"I know it looked dramatic, but it really wasn't because we had all the resources," Lewis said. "It's actually low acreage in comparison to the fires in northern Nevada."

The fire's cause is still under investigation by the state fire marshal.

Across the street from the burning brush on Simkins Road, Kendelle Contraveos and her husband, John, watched the fire from the wall of their backyard along with their Chihuahua, Beans.

John found out about the fire when a neighbor knocked on the door and Kendelle found out when she saw the smoke while driving home from a hair appointment.

Kendelle got through the blockade set up at the corner of Simkins and Leslie when she explained she had to get her horse, George, out from the barn.

"He's a little panicked," Kendelle explained. "I shut the barn. I'd rather him see it because sometimes its better to just see it."

Fortunately, the rescue workers were able to stop the flames from crossing the street and aside from some smoky air, the neighboring residents were no worse for wear as a result of the fire.
