The woman accused of leaking confidential information in exchange for drugs while working at the Nye County District Attorney's Office was given a 12-32 month suspended sentence Friday by Judge Joe Bonaventure.

Former legal secretary AnnJett Switzer will be credited for time served following successful completion of probation, not to exceed two years.

Switzer pleaded guilty in April to one count of misconduct of a public officer. She was arrested last September while working at the district attorney's office for leaking information in exchange for drugs.

"I've been completely torn apart," a sobbing Switzer told the court, explaining how her marriage and children have been affected by her arrest.

She and her family moved away in hopes of starting a new life, Switzer said.

"I don't know if I'll be able to forgive myself," she added.

Before handing down the sentence, Bonaventure made known his thoughts on the seriousness of the crime.

"When you break the public trust, that's a horrible thing," he said. "That's what I've always thought in my career."

Switzer's probation prohibits her from consuming alcohol, despite her attorney's request that the judge allow Switzer to drink "one beer while watching NASCAR."

Bonaventure allowed Switzer to trade community service, which the defense argued would be difficult to complete in Round Mountain, for a $500 fine.

The sentence was outlined in a plea agreement. Bonaventure followed the deal's recommendations, despite the courtroom antics of Switzer's attorney, Harry Kuehn.

"All I can say is this is Nye County; it's the goofiest place in the world," Kuehn said when asked why he couldn't contact a local substance abuse counselor about the results of a required evaluation she conducted on Switzer.

Bonaventure spoke a few minutes later about Switzer's alleged history of alcohol abuse.

"In my opinion, she has a drinking problem," he said.

"Just like our district attorney," Kuehn quipped, referencing recent auto accidents involving District Attorney Bob Beckett.

A visibly annoyed Bonaventure had the statement stricken from the record and moved on.

Other terms of Switzer's sentence require she receive evaluations for mental health and substance abuse problems. She also will be required to obtain a valid driver's license.
