An Air Force pilot participating in the annual Red Flag training exercise at Nellis range was killed late Wednesday morning after his fighter jet crashed about 50 miles east of Goldfield.

A second pilot in the two-seater F-15D Eagle was taken to O'Callaghan Federal Hospital at Nellis around 1:30 p.m and is listed in stable condition.

So far, the accident's cause has not been determined.

"There's an accident investigation board that's being convened to find out what caused the accident," said Senior Airman Andrew Dumboski, an Air Force spokesman.

The pilots, whose names were withheld until their next of kin could be notified, were members of the 65th Aggressor Squadron.

The squadron, Dumboski said, was tasked with simulating "opposing enemy air forces during Red Flag exercises here."

Although Red Flag exercises will continue, members of the 65th Aggressor Squadron will plan to take the day off to deal with their loss, the Air Force said.

The first session of Red Flag, an annual combat training exercise, started July 21 and will end today. A second session will run from Aug. 11 through Aug. 22.

Air forces from England, Sweden, Turkey and Brazil, as well as NATO aircraft from Germany, have participated so far this year. The Air Force expects crews from France, India and South Korea to take part in Red Flag exercises later this month.

American pilots taking part have come from Nellis and bases in North Dakota, Oklahoma and Washington, according to an Air Force statement.

Additional details surrounding the accident were slated for release during a Thursday press conference.

More information will appear in the Wednesday edition of the PVT.
