An end of an era occurs Friday, when Pahrump Valley's baseball and fast-pitch softball teams play their final on-campus Southern Nevada Class 3-A League games.

The action begins at 1 p.m., with the Trojans hosting Las Vegas Faith Lutheran in season-ending doubleheaders.

Pahrump Valley is moving into the Class 4-A Sunset Region Southwest Division in the 2008-2009 school year. So next spring, the Trojans will be taking on the likes of Bishop Gorman, Sierra Vista and Durango, among others, in diamond action.

For Faith Lutheran, too, the games will have some significance. According to reliable sources, the Faith Lutheran school board has approved a plan for the Crusaders' athletics programs to move into Class 4-A in the 2009-2010 school year. Which means Southern 3-A league membership will be down to Boulder City, Overton Moapa Valley and Mesquite Virgin Valley when that occurs.

The boys' golf team will be the final Trojans' squad to compete in town. On May 8, Bob Hopkins' team will host the Southern 3-A regionals at Mountain Falls. The track team completed its home schedule April 11, when the Rotary Invitational was contested on the Trojans' all-weather quarter-mile oval.

The next on-campus action is tentatively scheduled Sept. 5, when the Trojans' football team entertains Las Vegas Desert Oasis in the 2008 season opener. Pending are volleyball and soccer openers.

Friday's games will have special significance, as well.

Coach Rich Lauver said the Trojans' doubleheader at Overton Moapa Valley Tuesday "was the start of the playoffs."

"We have to win (at Moapa Valley)," said Lauver, after the homestanding Trojans lost 10-3 to defending Class A state champion Las Vegas Calvary Chapel Saturday. The Trojans were 4-8 in league games, after bowing 6-3 and 11-10 (in eight innings) to Mesquite Virgin Valley Friday. Moapa Valley fell to 3-9 after losing 17-5 and 20-7 to defending league, regional and state champion Faith Lutheran Thursday.

Faith Lutheran defeated the Trojans 5-3 and 8-2 in league games at Las Vegas two weeks ago and was 11-1 in 3-A going into a twin bill against Virgin Valley Tuesday.

Pahrump Valley's softball team moved to 11-1 in the league after 12-1 and 11-1 romps past Virgin Valley Friday. Faith Lutheran was 9-1 going into a doubleheader against Virgin Valley Tuesday. Today, the Crusaders play Boulder City, and Friday, they are at Floyd Field to battle coach Preston Dockter's team, now 24-6 in his first season as coach.

PVHS and Faith divided a doubleheader in Las Vegas, the Crusaders winning 9-0 before falling 12-5.
