Pahrump Valley's baseball and fast-pitch softball teams are at home today against Southern Nevada Class 3-A League rival Mesquite Virgin Valley, with varying degrees of urgency facing the Trojans.

Under the gun is the baseball team, which has lost four straight league games -- including a doubleheader at Boulder City Tuesday. The Eagles prevailed 8-1 and 8-7 in eight innings to drop the Rich Lauver-coached Trojans to 4-6 and into fourth place in the league.

Virgin Valley is 7-5 in the league and two games behind Las Vegas Faith Lutheran (7-1). The Bulldogs split a doubleheader with Overton Moapa Valley, winning 3-1 after bowing 8-6 Tuesday.

Moapa Valley is now 3-7 in the league; the Pirates will host the Trojans Tuesday in a twin bill starting at 3:30 p.m. The Trojans' league campaign ends May 2 at home against defending league, regional and state champion Faith Lutheran.

Winning at least four of their final six games is the only answer for the Trojans, whose pitching staff has been racked for 29 runs while the offense has generated just 13 runs in those four losses. A 4-2 mark over the next week would leave the Trojans at 8-8 in the league and would assure them of a playoff berth.

The post-season begins with the regionals May 8-9-10 at Boulder City, which for years has not been a pleasant place to play for PVHS baseball teams.

In fast-pitch softball, Pahrump Valley is 9-1 -- and tied with Faith Lutheran for first place in the league -- after its 4-3, 11-4 sweep of Boulder City Tuesday.

Virgin Valley visits today in the wake of having lost 13-3 and 9-0 Tuesday at home to Moapa Valley, previously winless in 10 league starts. The Bulldogs are 5-7 in 3-A starts, two games ahead of Boulder City (3-9).

Should Pahrump Valley -- 20-7 in all games under the direction of first-year coach Preston Dockter -- and Faith Lutheran sweep their next four league games, they will both be 13-1 when the Trojans and Crusaders clash at Floyd Field May 2 (1 p.m.) At stake will be the regular season title and a No. 1 seed in the playoffs.

The double-elimination playoffs, however, cannot be focused on how teams are seeded. Only the Southern regional champion (in both baseball and softball) advance to the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association-sanctioned state tournaments, to be played May 15-16-17 in Reno.

*Coach Andy Schneider's Pahrump Valley's track team is at the Ron Resler Invitational at Boulder City today, starting at 3 p.m.

The Trojans' regular season ends at The Meadows Invitational May 3. The Southern 3-A regionals are May 9-10 at Moapa Valley, with the state championships to be decided May 16-17 at Damonte Ranch in Reno.
