Desert Tortoise plan

It should be obvious to all that our esteemed Nye County Commissioner Gary Hollis (relative to the realtor Harris Hollis) would reject anything that might impede or restrict development in Pahrump because it might impact his family fortunes.

When are we going to wake up and realize that we have limited resources that we need to protect and conserve (for those Californians who have moved here, no we don't get our water from the Colorado River) including the desert Tortoise.

As to Tim Hafen's comment that environmentalists are good people but they don't want any development, I would reply that Tim Hafen might be a good person, but all he cares about is how much money he can make.

Wake up, residents of Pahrump. These two don't care about the tortoise (or us) and would sell your grandmother if it would make them a buck.

I defy these two men to prove how building thousands of homes here is going to improve my life, especially when there are few jobs here, limited water, no funds for roads, fire or police, etc.

Think of all the problems Las Vegas has that are directly related to the huge numbers of homes built without thought to the funds needed for infrastructure and resources.

If you want Pahrump to turn into Las Vegas, just count on our commissioners and their developer friends to do it for you.

Lost and found

To whom it may concern:

I don't know your name or who you are but I'd like to thank you for returning my handicap placard to the DMV.

I received it in the mail the other day. I had looked high and low for it and didn't realize it had blown out of our car.

Again, thank you. There are still some people who are thoughtful and honest.

Detention facility

Please be advised that I have been against the detention facility from the very beginning.

I moved to Pahrump for the small town atmosphere and quiet of the desert. I also enjoy seeing the stars at night, (which you can't see if many bright lights are present). I know this for a fact having come from a large town with many street lights.

I don't believe that our water supply is sufficient to withstand the amount you are quoting.

We were here first and as such, should have a say in what happens in our town. If the county commissioners want this, then maybe we should think about voting them out at the next election. I, for one, plan on doing just that.

If Las Vegas needs a place to put their detainees, then build a detention facility in Las Vegas. They have a lot of land north of Las Vegas, put it there. Why should we let them drain our water like they have their own.

It is the people of Pahrump who will end up paying for this fiasco. It will also not do anything for our economy since most of the workers will be imported from elsewhere.

I will be faxing a copy of this to Mr. Scott Stermer.

ROBERTA GAUL

Have a care

This is a letter to the Pahrump Town Board, The Nye County Commissioners and everyone connected with the Baker to Vegas run:

Early Sunday morning/late Saturday night, at around 12:30 a.m., I heard what sounded like a bunch of Marines outside calling cadence. It turns out it was a vehicle following a runner up 372 with a loudspeaker blaring the sounds.

This shows a complete lack of respect and concern for the people that live along the running route.

It's bad enough that we have to put up with the inconvenience of our roads being blocked by these runners but there is no reason at all that we should have to put up with such noise.

I ask the town and the county to restrict the noise level from now on. If this happens next year, I will chase down the vehicle and press charges. Let's see how they enjoy be inconvenienced by coming back to Pahrump to go to court.

I don't think I'm asking for much, just enforce the noise laws. These runners and their chase vehicles are not exempt from the laws, are they?

Not enough information

(Faxed to 202-353-4611)

To Whom it May Concern:

We are concerned about a potential Federal Detention Center here in Pahrump, Nev., a small town.

The idea has raised questions and so far the community is without sufficient information. The main question is; Where are these offenders released to?

I am sure that once you supply sufficient data, there will be numerous questions and concerns. At this time, the data is limited and sketchy.
