Red Barn opens with printmaking exhibition
By RICHARD STEPHENS
BEATTY -- Goldwell Open Air Museum's Red Barn Art Center opened its exhibition season April 20 with a reception for "Out of Print," an exhibit of work by a varied group of printmaking artists. Guests lingered, taking their time viewing the works and learning about the Red Barn and plans for its use for exhibits, workshops, and artist's residencies. Some also explored the surrounding desert and nearby ghost town. Museum president Charles Morgan said that Goldwell wanted to open with a printmaking show, since printmaking will be "an important part of the Barn's workspace program." A beginning printmaking workshop at the close of the show, June 14-15, will make use of the barn's printmaking facilities. The opening reception was well attended, with visitors from Las Vegas, Beatty and California. The show will run until June 15, and will be open for viewing Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. The exhibit, on loan from the Utah Arts Council, includes work ranging from the very abstract to detailed realism. The artists represented are well-known, and many of them are or were university art faculty members. Later this year the Red Barn will host workshops by professional artists, including one in woodblock printmaking and another in watercolor. Other art events are also in the planning stages. The Red Barn Art Center is located just southwest of Rhyolite on the site of historic Bullfrog, an unsuccessful rival of Rhyolite. Visitors can see it off to their left as they drive into the ghost town. |
