SOFTBALL, BASEBALL Playoffs are looming for South 3-A teams
By DON McDERMOTT
The top four teams in Southern Nevada Class 3-A fast-pitch softball teams for the regional playoffs May 8-9-10 at Boulder City have, for practical purposes, been determined. Overton Moapa Valley, with six starts left, is 0-10 and is three games behind fourth-place Boulder City, 3-7. The Pirates lost 8-2, 8-5 to Las Vegas Faith Lutheran (9-1) Friday, when the Eagles -- who hosted Pahrump Valley in a twin bill Tuesday -- dropped to 3-7 with 6-1 and 15-9 losses to Mesquite Virgin Valley. Mesquite Virgin Valley is 5-5 in the league, three games behind second-place Pahrump Valley, which was 7-1 going into Tuesday's action. The Trojans split with River Valley, Ariz., in a non-league doubleheader Thursday, bowing 11-9 before running away to an 8-1 victory at Floyd Field. According to standings and statistics reported on the Web site, maxpreps.com, Faith Lutheran is 21-9 in all games. Pahrump Valley is 20-6; other overall records listed on that site are incorrect. *Faith Lutheran took charge in baseball, sweeping Moapa Valley 6-0 and 15-5 to boost its record to 7-1. The Crusaders are two games ahead of Virgin Valley (6-4), which swept Boulder City 6-5, 7-6. The Eagles fell to 3-7 in the league, two games behind Pahrump Valley (4-4). Moapa Valley is precariously close to elimination from playoff contention at 2-6. But it should be remembered that in 2007, Pahrump Valley was in a similar position when the Trojans then won six of their last eight games to earn a playoff berth. The Trojans finished second in the regionals, then advanced to the state finals before bowing to repeat champion Faith Lutheran. Virgin Valley is 18-7, Pahrump Valley 15-9, Moapa Valley 12-8, Faith Lutheran 14-13 and Boulder City 8-13 in all games, according to maxpreps. Bobby Vallet of Moapa Valley leads league batters at .639, with Iggy Wagner at .532 and Ethan Wald at .410 for the Trojans, according to the Web site. Boulder City will host the baseball and softball regional tournaments May 8-9-10, with the champion in both sports moving on to the state tournament May 15-16-17 at Reno.
