Valley Cruisers Show and Shine
By CHRISTINA EICHELKRAUT
A few vintage muscle cars rumbled their way into Petrack Park Saturday, closely followed by everything from slinking Corvettes to post-World War II behemoths complete with fins and chrome fenders. There was even a large display of turn-of-century cars (think hand brake and open-air seating atop skinny tires) that puttered into place at the Pahrump Valley Cruisers Show and Shine. But the Valley Cruisers aren't the only car enthusiasts in town. Bob Harris, member of the Un-Club Boys, could be found lovingly dusting off the bright yellow paint on his 1953 Buick, boasting all-Buick running parts. Chuck Tractor, a former Pahrumpian who moved to Las Vegas several years ago, took the opportunity to show off his 1970 Chevy Impala. "The cars," he said. "It's all about the cars and seeing old friends and old faces." Earlier in the day Larry Chumley and his 4-year-old grandson, Dylan, were setting up camp in front of Larry's 1958 Chevy Impala convertible. "I'm a car guy," Larry explained. "We've got a few but this is the only one in show condition." When he jokingly pointed to the car and said he owned "the ugly one over there," Dylan promptly and defiantly chimed in, "That's not ugly, its nice." The life-long junior car guy's sentiments were echoed by nearly everyone who took advantage of the sunny afternoon to stroll the park while listening to appropriate oldies from the bands that played. The show also drew the attention of Dean and Evelyn Haug, who pulled in to check out the cars while driving through town on an RV trip. "We were just passing through and happened to see it," Dean said. "It's a wonderful display." "I couldn't believe how many old cars there are, and they all look so nice," Evelyn said. But cars weren't the only thing keeping attendees busy. Valley Cruiser Members Annie Moniz and Vickie Buzeck had just finished judging the limbo and Hula Hoop contest that featured many child participants. Both members were thrilled about the great turn-out for the show, both on the visitor and the business sides. "The town of Pahrump has donated more items for raffles this year than any other year," Buzeck said. "The town has really come through." Some of the prizes that were given away throughout the day included a free eye exam and sunglasses by Dr. George Leaks and hanging planters donated by Star Nursery. "The toughest thing will be to judge the cars," Moniz said. "I'm glad we're not judging." The Pahrump Valley Cruisers invite anyone with any kind of vintage or restored vehicles to join them at their monthly meetings held the second Monday of the month at Seemore's II, located on Highway 160. |
