3-A LEAGUE Trojans, Faith in battles for first
By DON McDERMOTT
Pahrump Valley's baseball and fast-pitch softball teams played at Las Vegas Faith Lutheran Tuesday, with Southern Nevada Class 3-A League leads in those sports at stake. In baseball, the Trojans were 4-2, after their split at Mesquite Virgin Valley Friday left them percentage points behind the 3-1 Crusaders, who divided a doubleheader against Boulder City. In softball, both the Trojans and Crusaders were 6-0 in the league; barring a complete collapse, both Pahrump Valley and Faith Lutheran have already clinched playoff berths. Last Friday, the Trojans lost 5-3 to the Bulldogs in the first game of the baseball doubleheader, as Brent Horlacher pitched a five-hitter for the homestanding Bulldogs. In the nightcap, however, Pahrump Valley slugged 17 hits, including two homers and a triple by Mike Gonzalez, as the Trojans ripped Virgin Valley 21-12. Gonzalez drove in six runs to lead the offense and he pitched three innings of clutch relief to keep Pahrump Valley in control. Freshman lefthander Sam Morrow pitched the seventh inning to stop a minor Bulldog uprising and end a game that required 3 hours, 35 minutes to complete. In softball, pitching again paced the Trojans to a sweep. Senior righthanders Tori Thomas and Ashleah Barney allowed only one run each as the Trojans prevailed 5-1 and 14-1. The first game was a grinder, as Ashley Simmons, the Bulldog pitcher, was able to stymie a couple uprisings by the Trojans. In the nightcap, a seven-run second-inning breakout powered the Trojans to a run-rule victory, their third in six league starts. Faith Lutheran's baseball team split with Boulder City, losing 2-0 before running away to an 11-1 victory. In softball, Jessie Tracy powered the Lady Crusaders to two easy wins. The Trojans are idle Friday in baseball. In softball, the PV girls go to River Valley, Ariz., for a doubleheader Thursday. Tuesday, Boulder City will host the Trojans in baseball and softball doubleheaders, starting at 3:30 p.m. NOTES -- In Northern 3-A baseball, Dayton is 12-4 in all games, 8-1 in the league ...
