AT MESQUITE Trojan golfers test sites for state tourneyPVT Pahrump Valley's boys golf team was in Mesquite Tuesday and Wednesday and will be back there April 16-17 to play courses to be used in the Nevada Class 3-A State Championships May 13 and 14. The Trojans rank second in the Southern League, with Las Vegas Faith Lutheran first, Mesquite Virgin Valley third, Overton Moapa Valley fourth and Boulder City fifth. In a match Wednesday at Falcon Ridge, Faith Lutheran had 401, Virgin Valley 413, Pahrump Valley 434, Overton Moapa Valley 458 and Boulder City 469. Faith Lutheran had three of the top five scorers, with Virgin Valley's Anthony Locero earning medalist honors with 75. The point totals, after five matches, are Faith Lutheran, 50; Pahrump Valley, 44; Virgin Valley, 41; Moapa Valley, 35 and Boulder City, 31. Faith Lutheran had maintained its No. 1 ranking April 3, by shooting 389 on the par 71, 6,189-yard course in Needles, Calif. The Trojans had 399, with Virgin Valley at 410, Moapa Valley 416 and Boulder City 453. For the Trojans, Will Peers had 76, Cameron Belcher and Anthony Franco 78 each, Elliott Owens 90, Shane Lindemann 85 and Daniel Shimakawa 82. For the Crusaders, player of the year points standings leader Yuki Kato had 72, with Blake Hampton at 78, Mike Mayer 75, Alex Vance 80, Trevor Ensign 84 and Charley Berry 89. Joshua Chambers had 77 to lead Virgin Valley, which had Jordan Smith shoot 82, Jacob Chambers 86, Anthony Lucere 81, Bryson VanHouten 84 and Justin Teerlink 107. For Moapa Valley, Jon Oglesby had 79, Johnathan Wilson 92, Taylor Stevens 85, Andrew Andersen 90, Travis Causey 79 and Cody Nichols 83. Boulder City, in a rebuilding season, had Branden Faircloth shoot 78. Ryan Roundtree added 87, Nick Stevens 86, Jacob Lynell 105 and Nick Hoffman 97. Needles, a Class 2-A team which occasionally competes against 3-A opponents, had 483. Cullen Pottmeyer led with 88, while Shane East had 95, Nolan Hartwick 96, Kevin Hartwick 101, Mike Rowe 103 and Mike Lowenthal 113. In the player of the year standings, Kato is in a strong position to claim that title; after four matches, he had 47 points and is averaging 73.8 strokes per 18 holes. Belcher had 37.5 points and is averaging 77.8. Third at 36 (79.0) was Hampton and fourth was Josh Chambers (30, 82.0). Completing the top five was Mayer (29, 82.8). For Pahrump Valley, Peers was at 15 (86.8), Franco 16 (85.3), Owens 13 (89.3), Lindemann 17.5 (85.8) and Shimakawa 9 (86.3). Josh Spradlin placed in one match for a point. NOTES -- Pahrump Valley will host the Southern regionals May 8 at Mountain Falls; the state tournament is May 13-14 at Mesquite's Palms and CasaBlanca courses ... In Class 2-A (which will include Tonopah), the regionals are May 6 at the par 71, 6,135-yard Desert Rose Golf Club in Las Vegas; the state tournament is May 12-13 at Rivers Edge in Needles, Calif. ... The Class 4-A Sunset Regional tournanent is May 5 at the par 72, 6,753-yard Red Rock Country Club in Summerlin; the Sunrise playoffs are May 5 at the par 72, 6,749-yard Anthem Country Club in Henderson ... The state 4-A finals are May 12-13 at the TPC Canyons Course, a par 72, 7,06t3-yard layout in Las Vegas. |
