Listening -- really listening -- to what's on
I was listening to the English language service from Radio Vilnius the other night and heard a news story that brought me to rigid attention.

WASHINGTON -- Hillary Clinton's campaign, which is a guttering candle, has suffered a perhaps extinguishing gust of ill wind. Her principal strategist has been forced to resign from that role.

Pluto's big identity crisis
Once upon a time there were nine planets. Mr. Dickerson, my favorite science teacher, assured us that these nine planets orbited our sun. He displayed a poster depicting nine orbital paths. A solar-system mobile dangled from a bookshelf in the back of his classroom, presenting nine scaled down planets and a large orange ball, centrally located.

A law to keep innocent kids down
An Arkansas school superintendent walked over and said he'd become so troubled that he'd written me a letter. But he hadn't mailed it and probably wouldn't. He had enough trouble as it was.

Revisiting 'A Nation at Risk'
In April 1983, a blue ribbon panel created by the Reagan Administration issued a report that dramatically changed the public dialogue over our nation's education system. "A Nation at Risk" contained dire warnings about the state of our schools.
