Concert at Scotty's Castle

Special to the PVT

DEATH VALLEY, Calif. -- Many visitors have enjoyed the sounds of the Welte-Mignon pipe organ at Scotty's Castle over the years.

With modern technology it is possible to have the organ play without an organist sitting at the console. Using that technology to play the organ preserves the historic console.

What is missing is the spontaneous, human equation. Once each year visitors have a chance to experience that.

The 2007 concert was so popular that this year an additional night of live music has been added. The concert dates will be June 13, 14 and 15 starting at 7 p.m. each evening.

To make reservations, call the Death Valley Natural History Association at 760-786-2146 ext. 10. Seating is limited to 40 people. Last year tickets sold out quickly, so reserve your seat early.

The organist for the 2008 concert will be Donna Parker.

She began studying organ at the age of 7 and was introduced to theater organs four years later.

Her first recording was made when she was 15 and she hasn't stopped since.

Parker has played in a wide variety of venues including the Los Angeles Sports Arena, Universal Studios, restaurants, television and historic movie palaces. Her talent led to her being named Organist of the Year in 1996 by the American Theatre Organ Society.

Her dedication to theater organ art form boosted election to the board of directors of ATOS. Parker's concert schedule has taken her all over the world and this summer she will be in Death Valley.

The ticket price will be $30 per person and the money will help with the annual maintenance and tuning of the pipe organ and the maintenance of the Deagan Chimes in the chimes tower.

For more information call Scotty's Castle at (760) 786-2392 or check the Web site at www.nps.gov/deva.
