Special ops training expected

The town will once again host a Nellis Air Force Base training exercise during which four planes will track ground personnel traveling within the town.

Similar training exercises that took place six months ago helped to train Air Force personnel now flying in Iraq and Afghanistan, Capt. Scott Mills, an A-10 pilot told the town board.

Mills said the exercises would be very unobtrusive and the ground personnel being tracked would not have weapons or be in uniform.

He added that the planes will be flying at an altitude of 5,000 feet, and in that respect very little noise disturbance is expected.

The exercises will take place May 14 through 16 as well as May 19 through 20.

Whatever your opinions on legalized prostitution, there's no debate that it's a revenue-generating business.

And thanks to the town receiving its "brothel money" from the county, the Pahrump Valley Fire Rescue Service will be able to purchase two new replacement ambulances.

The cost is not expected to exceed $250,000.

The board also approved increasing the total limit for the town credit card to $50,000 from $15,000. The increased limit will make it easier for buildings and grounds and fire department staff to make minor purchases as well as deal with longer accounts payable cycles.

The board also saw a presentation by young members of the Nye Communities Coalition on the dangers of tobacco use for National Kick Butts day.

In addition to a brief presentation covering the dangers of smoking and marketing techniques by tobacco companies, prior to the presentation a display of 1,200 shoes, representing the number of people who die each day from tobacco-related illnesses, was assembled in the Bob Ruud Community Center parking lot.
