Tonopah at Beatty today

Tonopah will play at Beatty today in Nevada Class A Central Division baseball and fast-pitch softball doubleheaders, starting at 1 p.m.

Beatty split a division baseball doubleheader with Round Mountain last Friday, winning 8-2 and losing 14-4. A 7-6 win against Trona, Calif., in a non-league game Tuesday gave coach Brian Hayes' Hornets a 4-8 record in all games. Tonopah lost 14-9 and 29-23 in a Central doubleheader last weekend.

Tonopah is 2-0 in the division, 5-7 in all games in softball. No Beatty results have been reported, so the Hornet record is unavailable.

Ashleah Barney pitched a five-inning no-hitter and her teammates put just four hits to good advantage, as Pahrump Valley defeated Overton Moapa Valley 10-0 in the first game of a Southern Nevada Class 3-A League fast-pitch softball doubleheader Wednesday at Floyd Field.

Barney, a senior righthander, struck out seven and walked just one in the game, stopped in the fifth inning by the 10-run mercy rule. Barney had two hits and two runs batted in for the Trojans, who completed the sweep by beating the Pirates 11-0 in the nightcap. Tori Thomas, another senior righthanded pitcher, allowed only one hit in another game stopped after 4-1/2 innings by the mercy rule.

Christine Gamble, a senior first baseman, was 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI for the Trojans, now 14-4 in all games and 2-0 in the league.

In Southern League baseball, homestanding Pahrump Valley and Moapa Valley split, the Pirates winning 5-0 on Dallin Neely's five-hitter and the Trojans surviving a 10-9 shootout in the nightcap. Senior righthander Daniel Miller got the save, getting the third out with the tying run at second base.

The Trojans did nothing to really threaten Neely in the opener, getting two runners thrown out in scoring position. In the second game, the Trojans led 4-0, 7-1 and 10-1, but surrendered six runs in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Iggy Wagner's bases-loaded double was a key hit for the Trojans, who did not play with the confidence or discipline of a team that went into the twin bill 10-4 against difficult non-league opponents.

The softball team is idle until Tuesday, when it plays a league doubleheader at home against Boulder City.

The baseball Trojans travel to Ridgecrest, Calif., Saturday to play a twin bill against Burroughs, 1-9 this season. Burroughs' lone win was a 1-0 conquest of Bishop, Calif., in the season opener.

Faith Lutheran's baseball and softball teams swept Mesquite Virgin Valley in Southern 3-A league games Tuesday.

In baseball, the defending state champion Crusaders won 12-5 and 16-3, collecting 24 hits in the sweep.

In softball, Faith Lutheran crushed the Bulldogs 11-0 and 10-0, with Crusader pitchers allowing only three hits.

NOTES -- Remaining league games in both baseball and softball are against Boulder City (home, Tuesday); Mesquite Virgin Valley (there, April 11); Las Vegas Faith Lutheran (there, April 15); Boulder City (there, April 22); Virgin Valley (home April 25); Moapa Valley (there, April 29) and Faith Lutheran (home, May 2). ...Non-league softball games are April 17, at home against River Valley, Ariz. ...
