PREP TRACK Trojans face up to tough rivals at Classic

LAS VEGAS -- The competition included some of the best track teams in the Western United States, but none of the Pahrump Valley athletes backed off from that challenge, in the Las Vegas Track Classic contested Friday and Saturday at Del Sol High School. As jets flew into McCarran International Airport at a rate of about one a minute. More than 1,000 boys and girls participated in a marathon of a track event that required almost 16 hours to complete. Scoring for Pahrump Valley: McKenzie Dean, who won the 3000-meter run in 11:23.55, finishing more than seven seconds ahead of her nearest pursuer; Dean was fifth in the 1500 in 5:14.63 and sixth in the 800 in 2:31.90 (the fastest 3-A time of the day). Kyle Mills, third in the triple jump with a hop, skip and jump of 44 feet, 9 1/4 inches; Ashley Rencher, third in the discus at 111-5 and fourth in the shot put at 35-5; James Chapman, tied for fifth in the pole vault at 11-6; Sergio Castro, 11th in the 400-meter dash in 0:51.69; Ande Floyd, 32nd, 100-meter dash, 0:12.16; Ashley Lindgren, seventh in the long jump at 15 feet, 16th in the 200 at 0:28.14 and 23rd in the 100 at 0:13.54; (her 100 and 200 times were the quickest for a 3-A girl in the meet). Tee Tee Hughes, eighth in the 300 hurdles in 0:50.0 and fourth in the 100 hurdles at 0:16.66 (which was the fastest time for a 3-A girl in the meet). They should all have been available Tuesday, when Pahrump Valley went to Henderson Liberty for a mid-week meet. Friday, the Trojans are in the Lewis Invitational at Overton Moapa Valley. Pahrump Valley is in a meet Tuesday at Boulder City, then is home for its own Rotary Invitational April 11. The Trojans remaining meets are April 16, at Sierra Vista; April 25, at Boulder City and May 3, at The Meadows Invitational in Las Vegas. The Southern regionals are May 9-10 at Overton, with the state championships May 16-17 at Damonte Ranch High School in Reno. |
