State academic tests delayed the opening of Pahrump Valley High School's final baseball and fast-pitch softball seasons in the Southern Nevada Class 3-A League until today.

With both doubleheaders to begin at 1 p.m. on campus, the Trojans will play Overton Moapa Valley's Pirates.

Pahrump Valley's baseball team, 10-4, was Class 3-A state runnerup to league rival Las Vegas Faith Lutheran in the 2007 season, while the softball Trojans, 12-4 this spring, lost in the state semifinals after winning the regional title.

Pahrump Valley defeated homestanding Las Vegas Eldorado 12-5 in a non-league baseball game Friday, in its last start.

Coach Doug Marion's team trailed 5-0 after four innings when it erupted for back-to-back six-run rallies.

Danny Cazier, Mike Gonzalez and Cody Nielsen combined to pitch a five-hitter for Pahrump Valley, which had 10 hits and took advantage of six Eldorado errors.

The Trojans' softball team, with first-year coach Preston Dockter, in charge, went 3-2 in the Kingman, Ariz., tournament. PVHS defeated Window Rock, Ariz., 8-2; lost 3-1 to Henderson Foothill; defeated Parker, Ariz., 6-0; defeated Henderson Liberty 5-2, and lost 7-0 to Las Vegas Durango.

Pahrump Valley slugged 33 hits and committed only three errors in the five games.
