PVHS band to perform The public is invited to enjoy a free evening of music at 7 p.m this Friday . on the football field of PVHS. The Marching band will be premiering the halftime show, "Music for a Darkened Theater." There is no cost and concessions will be available. Homeland Heroes dinner The Homeland Heroes will hold their monthly dinner will be tonight, from 5-7 p.m. at the VFW Post 10054, 4651 S. Homestead Road. Beef brisket, mashed potatoes, corn, salad and dessert will be served for $6. My Paralegal has donated an Estate Plan package for a drawing. It's a $350 value. Recognition Dinner The Nye County Democrats will hold their first annual Recognition Dinner at the Pahrump Nugget on Oct. 13. Adoption fees for dogs and puppies is $64, and includes spay/neuter, rabies vaccination and one-year county license. Annual coat drive The most requested gift from Santa, according to the Chamber of Commerce, is a warm winter coat. Mankins Allstate Insurance will be collecting new and gently worn coats and sweaters for children and teens of Pahrump from Oct. 15 until Dec. 15. You may drop off the coats at our offices, 1271 S. Science share The LDS Pahrump Homeschoolers are hosting a "Super Science Share" on Wednesday Oct. 17 from 12 noon until 2 p.m. at Family to Family Connection. Power wheelchairs The Senior Wheels USA program makes power wheelchairs available to senior citizens and the permanently disabled at no cost to recipients if they qualify. Power wheelchairs are provided to those who can no longer walk or self-propel a manual wheelchair and who meet the additional guidelines of the program. No deposit is required. If the patient's need is for use in the home, call 1-800-246-6010. Festival shuttle This year, the Fall Festival is making a free shuttle service available for the event. The shuttles will run to and from Saddle West and the Nugget, to the park from noon to 11 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 5 and Saturday, Oct. 6. Blackwood Legacy concert A live concert with "Black Legacy" and featuring Rick Price from the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and former lead singer of the "Blackwood Brothers" is scheduled for 10 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 7 at the corner of Heritage Road and Homestead Road (3061 E. Library fine amnesty Pahrump Community Library is offering fine amnesty the week of Oct. 8-13. Fines will be removed from overdue items returned, no questions asked. Festival handicap parking This year, handicap parking is available in the front of the Bob Ruud Center. The parking area will be strictly enforced. Vehicles must have a handicap placard or license plate designation to use this area. All other vehicles will be ticketed. Ladies luncheon and program The Pahrump "Ladies Day out Luncheon" will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 20. A program will be presented including a fashion show by Patti's Sunflower Fashions. Talented Jo Langley, 11, is scheduled to sing. Guest speaker, Karen Gunderson, a former executive secretary, real estate broker and high school teacher will make a presentation of her life story. Quickbooks training class The Rural Nevada Development Corp. and the Nevada Small Business Development Center in partnership with Citibank will offer two classes for Quickbooks training at Great Basin Community College. Beginners workshop is 8 a.m.-noon Thursday, Nov. 1. The intermediate workshop will be held 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, Nov. 3. The cost for one session is $35 and the cost of both classes is $50. October food drive The Nevada Federal Credit Union is conducting a "drop and match" food drive during the month of October to benefit the Pahrump Family Resource Center. Send a commemorative envelope via the Pony Express on Sept. 29. You may purchase a 2007 commemorative envelope for $5 at the Chamber of Commerce. Address the envelope, and the it will be cancelled by the Postmaster with a commemorative cancellation stamp on Sept. 29. The envelope will be carried by the Pony Express trail ride for delivery at the Wild West Extravaganza Boomtown (Saddle West) at approximately 5 p.m. The addressee will be announced from stage and the delivery made. Host families/reps needed Into Edventures is currently looking for host families in the local area to host a foreign exchange student. These young ambassadors are all between the ages of 15 and 18 years of age and all speak English. Student profiles will begin arriving in January for students from a variety of countries. They come with their own medical insurance and spending money. Into Edventures is also looking for individuals to work as area representatives. Reps are needed to find host families and work with students and their families during placement. Individuals must enjoy teenagers and have good communication skills. Festival of Trees Nathan Adelson Hospice and The Golden Monarch Council is gearing up for the 3rd Annual Festival of Trees. The event will start Nov. 18 with the tree and wreath decorating party at the Pahrump Nugget along with an official tree lighting. The Festival of Trees Gala is scheduled for 6 p.m., Dec. 1 at the Nugget Event Center. Volunteer Homeland Reserve Unit VHRU is an organized group of retired and former law enforcement officers with the mission of providing trained and experienced resources to public safety agencies in Nevada and, potentially, to surrounding areas. VHRU maintains a web site that describes the mission and provides information regarding the organization, leadership, and on-going activities. Yucca Mountain open house The Department of Energy will present three new emergency response vehicles to Nye County during a ceremony at the Yucca Mountain Information Center, 2341 Postal Drive. An open house hosted by the Yucca Mountain Information Center, Valley Electric and Nye County Emergency Services will be form 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 29. There will be an interactive power demonstration and participation in emergency response related activities. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be served. Film Festival The Pahrump Arts Council will present the High Desert Shorts International Film Festival Sept. 27-30 at Pahrump Nugget. The film festival features short films and documentaries with related activities, awards and discussions. Thursday, Sept. 27, VIP tickets are available for a film viewing bus trip from the Nugget to the Winery and back with entertainment and refreshments at the Winery and a Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre at the Nugget. The tickets are $75. For the Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre only, tickets are $35. The film Competition begins Friday evening, Sept. 28 and continues through Saturday, Sept. 29. Winners Showcase and Animated Shorts on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 30. Cost is $5 for each event. Contact PAC at 751-6776 for more information. Cub Scouts day camp Honeysuckle Park was filled with Cub Scouts from around the valley July 25-27. Leaders and parents from the eight Packs in Pahrump helped make the week fun and exciting. The first two days were split between Terribles Lakeside and Honeysuckle Park with fishing, games and crafts. Friday was a water battle and egg drop at the park. Saturday, July 28, all the Cub Scouts went to Camp Kimball at Mt. Potosi and spent the day shooting archery and BB guns, hiking, making leather and wood crafts and marshmellow guns. Thank you to all the Cub Scout Packs and to Troop 360 from Sandy Valley for your help and scouting experience and to all the local businesses who kept us in supplies throughout the weekend. Thanks also to the parents, family and friends for all your hard work. Pahrump swap meet The Model A club and the Unclub Boys will sponsor a swap meet from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 29 at the Pahrump Valley Speedway. The event will have race cars, hot rods, collector cars, motorcycle shows and a swapmeet. Admission is $3 (children under 12 are free). Food and beverages will be available. To RSVP or get more information, please call 775-751-8886. Amargosa Outing The Amargosa Conservancy' second outing of the series will be Oct. 13 to the Tecopa basin. The group will meet at the Amargosa Conservancy office at 9:30 a.m. This is a driving tour through the human and natural history of the ice age lake basin and includes 10 stops, all within walking distance of the points of interest. This tour is classified as full day, easy walking, 1 to 2 miles. Outings are free but suggested donations are, $20 for half-day and $30 to $50 for full day excursions.
