Inn, theaters, Home Depot are all on the way
By MARK WAITE
Developers of a Holiday Inn Express and Buffalo Wild Wings Grill presented revised plans to the Nye County Planning Department during a pre-submission conference this month. Meanwhile, the planned eight-plex movie theater at Terrible's Town is still alive, while farther north on Highway 160 construction should begin soon on the Home Depot. County planner Steve Osborne said developers of the Holiday Inn Express/Buffalo Wild Wings project came in for what he described as a conference prior to submitting formal plans for review by the planning department. "They come in and they talk with public works and planning staff to kind of get an idea what the requirements are before they actually submit for it. It helps the project along," Osborne said. The plans call for a three-story, 35,130-square-foot hotel building with 58 rooms. It would be located at the same spot as the previous application described, on the Frontage Road just south of the Wells Fargo Bank. It's the same location about which the Nye County Commission previously denied a waiver from county codes requiring a minimum 1,500-foot distance from schools, churches and the Pahrump Library on Nov. 16, 2005. However, the zoning code was changed in January 2006, reducing that minimum distance to 200 feet, Osborne said. The hotel and restaurant, which are part of the same project separated by a parking lot and porte cochere, would be located 240 feet from the Pahrump Library and about 1,000 feet from public and private schools, he said. The Pahrump comprehensive zoning map, enacted in June, designated that parcel as general commercial, Osborne said. The developers won't have to appear before the Pahrump Regional Planning Commission and Nye County Commission for a rezoning or waiver, but they would have to get approval from the Nye County licensing and liquor board for 15 slot machines planned in the restaurant and grill, he said. The Buffalo Wild Wings Bar and Grill will incorporate 6,889 square feet, according to the plans. Todd Kelley, the engineer for the project, referred inquiries to officials with Desert Mesa Construction, representatives of which were unavailable by press time. Brent Steed, senior building inspector for Charles Abbott and Associates, said he was told the developers would be presenting plans for the hotel and restaurant for review by county planners next month. Steed said developers could present plans for review for the long-awaited eight-plex movie theater, planned for the south side of Terrible's Town Casino, as early as the end of October. Patrick Lenahan, senior project manager for the Terrible's Town addition for Yaeger Architecture, confirmed "that's still the plan." Lenahan said he is scheduled to meet with officials from Brenden Theatres next week, the movie chain that will be located there. Brenden Theatres also has a theater complex at the Palms Resort in Las Vegas. "At this time we're still working on the plans," Lenahan said. Nye County commissioners a year ago approved rezoning that property from open use to general commercial. The plans presented for the rezoning included a 21,620-square-foot movie theater addition with 1,300 seats. A call to Herbst Gaming Company was referred to their legal counsel, who was unavailable by press time. Finally, Steed said Home Depot hired a contractor last week to construct its 106,278-square-foot store on a 19.7-acre site on the east side of Highway 160 just north of Basin Avenue. It will include an adjoining 34,760-square-foot garden center. Steed said he will meet with Home Depot officials today. He expects the company will be taking out the building permit in a matter of days. "It's very exciting to think they're coming in and we welcome them, both Buffalo Wings and the Holiday Inn. As the town grows we're finding it difficult to schedule events because of the shortage of rooms. This would be a big help and a good start for what we think the future would hold for the hotel rooms in the Pahrump area," said Paula Glidden, chairwoman of the Pahrump Tourism Board. A year ago former Terrible's Town General Manager Bill Ladd projected a groundbreaking for the theater complex in late fall of 2006 or during the subsequent winter months. That was later revised to this past August. The latest news indicates that project is still progressing and hasn't died, as some rumors have indicated. "Regarding the movie theater, I think it's well overdue and the community with support any theater that goes up and it would be attended by locals as well as tourists," Glidden said. |
