PVHS FALL SPORTS Volleyball, soccer teams facing key 3-A opponents
By DON McDERMOTT
The Southern Nevada Class 3-A season for the Pahrump Valley volleyball team began Tuesday, with the Lady Trojans playing at defending league and regional champion Las Vegas Faith Lutheran. Pahrump Valley, 9-8 in non-league matches under the direction of first-year coach Amy Hart, prepared for that match with a 25-22, 20-25, 25-20, 24-26, 15-7 victory at home against perennial state Class A power Pahranagat Valley Alamo. The visiting Panthers, who had defeated the Trojans twice this season, forced a showdown by rallying from a 23-20 deficit in the fourth game. In the decisive game, the Trojans romped to a 14-4 lead, then held off a minor rally to claim the win. The Trojans host non-3-A rival Lake Mead Christian Academy Thursday and league foes Overton Moapa Valley Oct. 2, Mesquite Virgin Valley Oct. 5, and Boulder City Oct. 9, before Faith Lutheran visits for a rematch Oct. 12. Pahrump Valley's boys defeated visiting Ely White Pine 3-0, while the girls had to settle for a 4-4 tie with the Bobcats, in Southern 3-A League soccer matches Saturday. Tuesday, the boys traveled to Las Vegas Faith Lutheran, while the girls were at home against the Crusaders, in key league matches. Thursday, the boys are at home against The Meadows, while the girls return to the pitch Saturday at home against Overton Moapa Valley (noon). The Trojans' defense kept the pressure on White Pine throughout most of the boys' game -- played on a sloppy wet field -- Saturday. Conditions actually helped the Trojans on one play, when a shot by the Bobcats stopped in a deep puddle, just in front of the goalline. Another White Pine shot hit the post minutes before that attempt. The PV boys are 7-0 in all matches, 4-0 in the league, under second-year coach Gene Smith. Brittany Orr scored three goals and Emily Poertner added one for Pahrump Valley, in the tie at White Pine. "It looks like we are going to have to win out to get a good seed in the playoffs," said Greg Leseberg, the Lady Trojans' coach. "We're now 2-0-2 in the league." The top four teams qualify for the Southern regionals, to be played Nov. 1 and 3 in Las Vegas. |
