The Pahrump Valley cross country team got a chance to run the Southern regionals course Saturday, in the Laughlin Invitational.

Lady Trojan junior McKenzie Dean liked what she saw, winning the small school varsity race in 20 minutes, 25 seconds. That time was duplicated by the large school varsity winner, Madison Rutter of the touring Australian Select team.

In the small school race -- 3.1 miles over a course laid out in Mountain View Park -- Gioia Rhodes and Brittany Hatchell of Las Vegas Faith Lutheran finished second (22:08) and third (22:10), respectively. Boulder City's Jo Jo Stanton was fourth in 22:31.

For Pahrump Valley, Stephanie Andros was 16th in 25:46, Ashlee Wolff was 18th in 26:25, Nicole Dillon was 23rd in 28:24, and Pam Hunter was 34th in 34:22. Andros and Wolff are juniors, while Dillon is a senior and Hunter a freshman.

The Trojans were fourth as a team with 80 points. Faith Lutheran had 34, Laughlin 57, and Kingman, Ariz., Academy 63.

In the large school team championship, Australia was first with 18 points; its runners finished 1-2-4-5-6. Las Vegas Shadow Ridge was second with 39 points.

In the boys' small school varsity event, Pahrump Valley was third with 105 points, as its runners were 17th, 18th, 20th, 23rd and 27th.

The runners and times were James Lucas, 20:23; David Jacobi, 20:24; David Binderim, 20:41; Ryan Howard, 20:44; Alex Anderson, 21:38, and Daniel Spradlin, 21:41. All are sophomores except Spradlin, who is a junior.

Coach Andy Andersen's team ran at Las Vegas The Meadows Tuesday and is slated to go to the Angel Park Invitational in Las Vegas Saturday.
