Trojans at the crossroads in football season
By DON McDERMOTT Pahrump Valley is 0-4. Yucca Valley is 0-2. Something has to give in this battle of winless Trojans football teams, colliding tonight (7:30 p.m.) at Yucca Valley, Calif. A victory tonight will help ease the pressure on Brian Hug's team, which has lost 24-20 at Phoenix, Ariz., Christian; 61-0 at San Diego, Calif., Torrey Pines; 33-6 at Chino, Calif., Don Lugo, and 55-0 to visiting Nevada Class 3-A power Spring Creek. The fact is, none of these first five games count in the Southern Nevada Class 3-A League campaign, so playoff chances still thrive. But winning at Yucca Valley is critical for the Trojans, who were not ready, in its game plan and mental approach, to play Spring Creek last week. Yucca Valley lost 28-0 on Sept.7 at San Jacinto and 54-7 to Perris, Calif., Citrus Hill at home last Friday. Both teams are undefeated, with their combined record 5-0. Yucca Valley lost 34-30 to Pahrump Valley in 2006, when the Nevadans rallied from a 30-6 deficit in the fourth quarter. The Californians play in the DeAnza League, along with Big Bear, Twentynine Palms, Desert Hot Springs, and Thermal Desert Mirage. Pahrump Valley will be idle next week, returning Oct. 5 in a Southern Nevada Class 3-A League game against defending state champion Mesquite Virgin Valley. The Trojans are at home Oct. 12 against Las Vegas Faith Lutheran, then close the regular season with road games at Overton Moapa Valley Oct. 19 and at Boulder City Oct. 25. |
