FISHING
LAKE MEAD A member of the Striper Club reeled in a striper that weighed nearly 10 pounds during a tournament last week. Anglers are finding lots of shad in the Boulder Beach area and have been catching some fish though the action has been slow. Lure patterns that resemble the small, silvery baitfish are generally productive. The Las Vegas Wash area is still producing lots of small fish. No report from the Overton Arm. LAKE MOHAVE Fishing has been described as fair to poor this past week. Those who are catching fish are finding success in 15 to 60 feet of water and at or near the bottom. The most productive times of day are still the early morning and late evening hours. Windy conditions have made the water murky and fishing with artificial baits very difficult. Trout fishing at Willow Beach has been poor as well though some anglers are finding success with spinners. Anglers can see trout in the water, but the fish haven't been taking their bait. Striper fishing has shown some improvement over recent weeks. Anchovies and sardines have been catching the fish. Anglers fishing from boats reeled in several fish between 22 and 36 inches long and weighing as much as 15 pounds. WAYNE E. KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA Both rainbow trout and largemouth bass have been taking bait. Shore anglers have been finding success from the dams at Haymeadow and Cold Springs. Boaters have been pulling in fish from pockets of open water. Often overlooked Dacey reservoir has been giving up some very nice rainbows. EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR Fishing has picked up as water temperatures have begun to drop. Anglers who work at it are bringing in limits of rainbow trout. PowerBait and night crawlers fished with mini marshmallows have both been productive. Nighttime temperatures have been in the 30s. ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR The water is very low and not too inviting, but anglers are still catching some fish. Night crawlers, PowerBait or mini marshmallows are generally a good choice. URBAN PONDS The urban ponds at Floyd Lamb Park, Lorenzi Park, Sunset Park, Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City and Hafen Park in Mesquite were all scheduled to receive a shipment of catfish during the past week. The final catfish plant for this year is scheduled for sometime in October. Catfish generally take prepared baits, night crawlers or small shrimp. The ponds are also a good place to catch a few bluegill. Try mealworms fished below a bobber. |
