Farmers Insurance Group and the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association have joined forces, to financially support championship events and conduct other programs in the Silver State. It is a five-year deal, which includes Farmers offering $30,000 in scholarships to Nevada student-athletes, according to the NIAA. The announcement was made by NIAA Assistant Director Donnie Nelson. The NIAA is the non-profit governing body of high school athletics in Nevada. Farmers Insurance Group, which has offices in the Pahrump Valley, is the largest multi-coverage insurer in the Silver State. Farmers has joint naming rights for NIAA state championship competition. In football, for instance, it will be the NIAA Nevada State High School Championships, presented by the Las Vegas Review-Journal and Farmers Insurance Group. There are 60 state championships decided in 16 sports combined each school year. Details of the NIAA-Farmers scholarship program, including eligibility requirements, will be announced in December, said the NIAA. Farmers reportedly will offer a "variety of educational initiatives, support programs and wellness materials for each high school community through its local agent offices. The NIAA said more information on this program will be announced. "On behalf of the NIAA staff, the board of control, 103 member schools and the more than 38,000 high school student-athletes of the Silver State, I want to thank Farmers Insurance Group for its overwhelming support of the association and its commitment to our local communities," said Eddie Bonine, the NIAA executive director. The Review-Journal became a major corporate sponsor five years ago. The NIAA itself was formed as the Nevada Interscholastic League in 1922 and became affiliated with the National Federation of State High School Associations in 1939. It became the NIAA in 1967 and for the last 10 years, has been headquartered in Reno. |
