PREP FOOTBALL Trojans on road to Yucca Valley
By DON McDERMOTT A year ago, the Pahrump Valley High School football team rallied from a 30-6 deficit in the fourth quarter to stun visiting Yucca Valley, Calif., 34-30. Friday night, the Trojans get another shot against Yucca Valley, on the Californians' field. Both teams have something to prove, with little to lose and everything to gain, the most important of which is to gain confidence and some momentum for the remainder of the season. Neither team -- both nicknamed the Trojans -- has won a game. Pahrump Valley fell to 0-4 Friday, with a 55-0 loss to visiting Northern 3-A title threat Spring Creek. Yucca Valley is 0-2 after bowing 54-7 to undefeated Mountain Pass League power Perris, Calif., Citrus Hill Friday. Pahrump Valley will be idle Sept. 28, returning to action Oct. 5 -- PVHS Hall of Fame Night -- against Nevada Class 3-A defending state champion and league rival Mesquite Virgin Valley. Yucca Valley has a couple more non-league tests before embarking on DeAnza Southern Section play in mid-October. Spring Creek, 3-1, had the football 11 times, The Spartans scored eight touchdowns -- including five on as many possessions in the second half. Spring Creek missed a 28-yard field goal and lost the ball on downs, as well as muffing a punt on its other possessions. ---- In other games involving Nye County teams, Tonopah dazzled Wells with its option-shotgun offense, rolling to a 56-14 victory; Beatty overwhelmed Sandy Valley 51-12, and Round Mountain lost 64-20 to previously winless Smith Valley. All three teams are idle this week, with Tonopah at home against Spring Mountain in the Class A Eight-Man Central Division opener for both teams. Beatty will host Lund in a non-division game that afternoon (3 p.m.). Round Mountain is at home Friday night against 1-A division rival Indian Springs. Tonopah's junior quarterback, Scott Thibodeaux, scored four touchdowns and gained 83 yards on 11 rushes. Senior halfback Kevin McElroy rushed for 83 yards and two TDs on 11 attempts and caught six passes for 93 yards and another two scores. Tyler Bessire, Nevada's leading receiver in the 2006 season, has recovered from an injury and returned to his wideout position. He caught seven passes for 62 yards, as Tonopah quarterbacks Thibodeaux and Sal Falcon completed 16 of 24 passes for 220 yards and three TDs, with no interceptions. Beatty had no trouble with Sandy Valley, dominating the rural Clark County team as quarterback Kyle Marchand and running backs Joe Serrano and Junior Dare ran with abandon. Round Mountain, decimated by roster losses through injuries, fell to a Smith Valley team which had not won a game this season. |
