Amargosa Outing The Amargosa Conservancy' first outing of the series will be Sept. 22 to China Ranch Date Farm. The group will meet at the China Ranch gift shop at 9:30 a.m., and observe a working date farm at harvest time. From harvest through final packaging, the tour offers hands-on participation as part of the experience. Free samples and a detailed tour of the farm is also included. The outing is classified as half day; easy walking. 1-2 miles. Outings are free but suggested donations are, $20 for half-day and $30 to $50 for full day excursions. United Way Golf Tournament The Jerome Pollock Memorial Golf Tournament is Sept. 22 at the Lakeview Executive Golf Course. Yucca Mountain open house The Department of Energy will present three new emergency response vehicles to Nye County during a ceremony at the Yucca Mountain Information Center, 2341 Postal Drive. An open house hosted by the Yucca Mountain Information Center, Valley Electric and Nye County Emergency Services will be form 9 a.m. to noon. There will be an interactive power demonstration and participation in emergency response related activities. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be served. Mexican-American breakfast Our Lady of the Valley Parish Hall is the location for a Mexican/American all-you-can-eat breakfast. Enjoy huevos rancheros, chilaquiles, chorizo, machaca, menudo, pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs and beans. The breakfast will be held 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sept. 30 at the parish hall, 781 E. Gamebird Road. The cost is $6. Daughters of Mary fish fry We will be having a fish fry for Oct. 5,. Nov. 2. There won't be one in Dec., but will resume Jan. 4, 2008. The fish fry dinners are the first Friday of the month, at the Our Lady of the Valley church hall, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on 781 E. Gamebird Road. We serve fried or baked fish, FF's, Cole slaw also fish tacos, clam chowder, homemade desserts and beverages. Jewelry sale and tea Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, 650 S. Blagg, will hold a gently used jewelry sale 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 13. All proceeds going to No To Abuse and matched by a grant from Thrivent Financial Pahrump Valley's Victorian Ladies will be in period dresses serving tea during the jewelry sale. This is a driving tour through the human and natural history of the ice age lake basin and includes 10 stops, all within walking distance of the points of interest. Community choir meeting The Pahrump Community Choir meets from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. each Wed. at the Rosemary Clarke Middle School music room. Anyone who likes to sing is welcome. Call 751-6957 for more information. Card players wanted Hand and foot canasta is played about once every three weeks at 10 a.m. at the Elks Club. Volunteer Homeland Reserve Unit VHRU is an organized group of retired and former law enforcement officers with the mission of providing trained and experienced resources to public safety agencies in Nevada and, potentially, to surrounding areas. VHRU maintains a web site that describes the mission and provides information regarding the organization, leadership, and on-going activities. The web site also contains an application form that can be downloaded by any former law enforcement officer who wants to become a part of the organization. If you have a picture of someone who has served or is serving in the military, and would like a picture displayed on the wall, bring an 8 x 10 photo with the first and last name, branch of service, dates of service, and phone number. Add $2 for the frame and drop all the information at the customer service desk. This is a stand alone project not affiliated with any other project or organization. Animal shelter needs volunteers The Nye County Animal Shelter is seeking volunteers to work either at the shelter or in the spay/neuter clinic. High Desert Bead & Fiber Artists The High Desert Bead & Fiber Artists Society for adults meets every Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Seemore's Ice Cream Parlor on Highway 160. Prescription meds assistance Nye County, in a joint effort with the National Association of Counties, is offering a prescription discount card for those Nye County residents whose prescriptions are not covered by insurance. Enrollment is free and there is no paperwork to complete or eligibility requirements to meet. These cards are accepted at all Nye County pharmacies. Pick up cards at pharmacies or stop by Nye County Health and Human Services, located at 250 N. Highway 160, Suite. 4, or call 751-7095. Artist Demonstrations The Pahrump Arts Council presents artist in residence demonstrations from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sept. 22 at the Pahrump Valley Museum. Demonstrations will be with Doris Smith and she will have student painter and a canvas and easel set up for guests and visitors to try their hand at art. For more information contact PAC office at 751-6776. Retired/senior volunteer program The Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteers need help. This program enables the elderly to stay in their homes by assisting with daily maintenance such ash shopping, medical appointments, etc. RSVP reimburses volunteers twenty-four cents per mile up to $20 per month and carries worker's compensation and excess auto liability on all volunteers. Additionally, volunteers receive training, annual seminar education and appreciation award dinners. To volunteer or get more information, call Jan Lindsay at 751-5282. Fiber Arts 2008 Get that quilt or needlework project going now. Plans for the annual Fiber Arts Show are under way, with a spectacular weekend event planned for mid-February 2008. Voces Latinas The Pahrump Arts Council presents Voces Latinas, a showcase of artwork by fifteen artists representing the diverse range of creative voices within the Latino community. The exhibit is curated by the Nevada Museum of Art and is part of the Nevada Arts Council Nevada Touring Initiative Program. The exhibit may be seen at the Nye County courthouse 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. daily, Mon. - Fri., until Sept. 19. The Pahrump Valley Chapter of the Nevada Council of the Blind will hold a monthly meeting at 1 p.m., Sept. 18, at the Pahrump Senior Center, 1379 W. Basin. All interested parties are invited to attend. The meeting will include a discussion on assistance services that restaurants, schools and public meetings should provide for the visually impaired as mandated by the American Disabilities Act. For more information, call Jim Kvool at 751-5730. Wine and cheese reception Pahrump Arts Council is holding a wine and cheese reception open to the public. The event will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Sept. 14 at the Charleston Peak RV Resort Clubhouse located at 3810 Winery Road #2, adjacent to the PV Winery. The current gallery provides a colorful backdrop for the event to honor PAC artists and galleries which include: Nye County Courthouse, PV Library and PV Senior Center. Additionally, PAC offers the Artistin Residence demonstrations and Art for Young People classes. It promises to be a vibrant mix of artists and art-minded leaders who keep Pahrump focused on the visual arts. There is no charge for this event, donations are accepted. Annual $10k dinner The Rotary Club of Pahrump Valley will holds it annual $10,000 fundraiser dinner Saturday at the Terrible's Lakeside amphitheater. Tickets cost $125 for a chance at the $10,000 prize. They include two gala dinner tickets. A no-host bar begins at 5 p.m., dinner starts at 6 p.m. Entertainment is scheduled at 7 p.m., a Polynesian revue. The event is a major fundraiser for Rotary Club projects, including money given to Pahrump Valley High School youth programs. The Rotary Club needs to sell all 300 tickets. Host families/reps needed Into Edventures is currently looking for host families in the local area to host a foreign exchange student. These young ambassadors are all between the ages of 15 and 18 years of age and all speak English. Student profiles will begin arriving in January for students from a variety of countries. They come with their own medical insurance and spending money, Into Edventures is also looking for individuals to work as area representatives. Reps are needed to find host families and work with students and their families during placement. Individuals must enjoy teenagers and have good communication skills. Letters by Pony Express Support your community and participate in a page of history. Send a commemorative envelope via the Pony Express on Sept. 29. You may purchase a 2007 commemorative envelope for $5 at the Chamber of Commerce. Address the envelope, and the it will be cancelled by the Postmaster with a commemorative cancellation stamp on Sept. 29. The envelope will be carried by the Pony Express trail ride for delivery at the Wild West Extravaganza Boomtown (Saddle West) at approximately 5 p.m. The addressee will be announced from stage and the delivery made. Nursing classes information session Great Basin College will hold an informational session for Registered Nurses interested in obtaining a Bachelor of Science - Nursing (BSN) degree. Students interested in learning about the requirements for obtaining an associate of applied science degree and becoming a registered nurse are also invited to attend. Faculty from the Great Basin College RN-BSN Program will discuss that program and the future delivery of GBC's associate of applied science degree in nursing to the Nye County. Elks soccer shoot Pahrump Elks Lodge #2796 is conducting a soccer shoot with registration starting at 8 a.m. Sept. 22 at Honeysuckle Park. The competition is open to boys and girls 13 years of age and under. The child's birthday should have occurred by Aug. 1. A trophy will be awarded to the winners of each age group during the Elks youth awards banquet next May. Film Festival The Pahrump Arts Council will present the High Desert Shorts International Film Festival Sept. 27 - 30 at Pahrump Nugget. The film festival features short films and documentaries with related activities, awards and discussions. Caregiver training Nathan Adelson Hospice is providing a two-day workshop to teach individuals caregiving in a home/hospice or health care/nursing home environment. The event will start Nov. 18 with the tree and wreath decorating party at the Pahrump Nugget along with an official tree lighting. The Festival of Trees Gala is scheduled for 6 p.m.. Dec. 1 at the Nugget Event Center. Gala festivities include entertainment, a no host bar, dinner and dancing, silent auctions, surprise raffle and door prizes.
