Gibbons to visit Nye, Esmeralda counties
By MARK WAITE
Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons will tour Pahrump, Beatty and Goldfield this weekend, on the second half of a summer 2007 tour of all 17 counties. Today, Friday, Gibbons is scheduled to visit the Boulder City railroad museum, the Searchlight Senior Center and the Laughlin Government Center. Tomorrow the governor will tour the Southern Nevada Correctional Center in Jean, then travel to Pahrump to tour Desert View Regional Medical Center. He will speak at a $250 per plate dinner tomorrow night at the Pahrump Nugget Casino as a fund-raiser for the Nye County Republican Party Central Committee. On Sunday, Gibbons will meet Beatty residents during a 12:30 p.m. appointment at the Ensenada Grill. From there it's north to the Goldfield Community Center for a 2:30 p.m. meeting with Esmeralda County residents. The governor visited Tonopah on his first summer tour in late July, when he cut the ribbon for the new sewer treatment plant, visited the farmer's market and the proposed Monte Cristo State Park in Esmeralda County. Gibbons spokeswoman Melissa Subbotin said some of the locations on this upcoming tour are fact-finding visits, other stops are designed to inform constituents about new state laws and gather input. "As a state we deal directly with many of the medical facilities throughout the state, and it's important for the governor to interact with staff first hand there and get a feel for the facility being provided to the residents," Subbotin said about the tour of the Desert View Regional Medical Center. The prison is also an important stop, she said. "There's a serious overcrowding issue at all our correctional facilities across the state," Subbotin said. Otherwise, Gibbons will use the visits to inform residents about policies created in the last legislative session and gather input for the next session of the legislature in 2009. "Our intent is to get out in the communities and interact with local residents, discuss issues important to them so we can discuss those issues in the next legislative session," Subbotin said. She added, "It's important for the governor to get out in the community and discuss how those new policies are going to be affecting them." After a recent influx of Democratic presidential candidates in Pahrump, this time it will be the turn of the Grand Old Party to meet the public. The fundraiser at the Nugget will be the first for Nye County Republican Party Central Committee Chairwoman Fely Quitevis, since she was appointed May 12. Freshman Congressman Dean Heller will also be present. The dinner will feature a western theme with cowboy hats and boots. The fundraiser begins with a no-host bar at 5:45 p.m., dinner follows at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for the dinner are available by contacting Quitevis at Precious Properties, 2090 S. Highway 160, or by calling her at 513-8447. |
