The Pahrump Valley High School Lady Trojans' junior varsity volleyball team opened its season Saturday in a 10-team invitational tournament, hosted by Las Vegas Arbor View.

The Lady Trojans held their own against many of their Class 4-A opponents.

The morning session started with pool play. The Lady Trojans came out with a 3-1 record.

The PVHS squad started fast with easy victories over Henderson Foothill (25-15, 25-10) and Las Vegas Rancho (25-7, 25-15).

The Trojans squandered leads against Palo Verde, falling 25-23, 25-22. Pool play was completed with a victory over Las Vegas 25-21, 25-14.

Pahrump Valley's record in pool play earned it the No. 2 seed in the single-elimination tournament.

Arbor View was easily dispatched in the opening game, 25-16. The Lady Trojans appeared in control in the second game with a lead of 21-14. The Aggies were able to knot the score at 21 before prevailing 26-24.

Two controversial rulings made the final game of the match more interesting than it should have been. A kill by Yaundee Otano pushed the score to 7-4.

A second Otano spike was deflected off a blocker, but was ruled in favor of the Aggies. A subsequent scoring error left the Lady Trojans with a slim 8-7 lead in a game to 15.

The game remained close at 10-8 before Alyson Kunzi served out for five points and secure a 15-8 victory.

The semifinal match pitted the Trojans against Centennial. The Bulldogs, sporting four players at 6 foot and above, breezed through pool play before stumbling against Bishop Gorman.

The Bulldogs opened a 13-9 lead. The Trojans battled back behind some well-placed serves by Heather Ward to close to 13-12. The matched stayed close the rest of the way.

At 22-22 a Bulldog serve caught the net, but crawled over and dropped to the floor. The Trojans refused to quit and prevailed 26-24.

The Trojans continued with emotional play to open a 3-1 lead off two straight aces from Rebecca Gamble and sprinted to an 11-6 lead. The taller Bulldogs finally started to dominate at the net to take a 14-13 lead before prevailing 25-14.

The final game was again won at the net as the Bulldogs pulled away for an 15-8 victory.

The JVs stand 4-2 on the season. The PVHS Volleyball teams are scheduled to play today at Lincoln County before traveling to Pahranagat Valley Alamo for games Saturday.

Pahrump Valley's varsity team, idle since Sept. 1, will play both days as well.
