Nursing classes information Great Basin College will hold an informational session for Registered Nurses interested in obtaining a Bachelor of Science - Nursing (BSN) degree. Students interested in learning about the requirements for obtaining an associate of applied science degree and becoming a registered nurse are also invited to attend. Faculty from the Great Basin College RN-BSN Program will discuss that program and the future delivery of GBC's associate of applied science degree in nursing to the Nye County public. Sessions will be held on Sept. 18 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and again on Sept. 19 from 10 a.m. to noon. Both sessions will be held on the Great Basin College campus, 551 East Calvada Blvd, Room 123. Council of the Blind meeting Decreased vision could indicate becoming visually impaired. The Pahrump Valley Chapter of the Nevada Council of the Blind will hold a monthly meeting at 1 p.m. Sept. 18 at the Pahrump Senior Center, 1379 W. Basin. All interested parties are invited to attend. The meeting will include a discussion on assistance services that restaurants, schools and public meetings should provide for the visually impaired as mandated by the American Disabilities Act. For more information call Jim Kvool, 751-5730. Annual $10k dinner The Rotary Club of Pahrump Valley will holds it annual $10,000 fundraiser dinner Saturday at the Terrible's Lakeside amphitheater. Tickets cost $125 for a chance at the $10,000 prize. They include two gala dinner tickets. A no-host bar begins at 5 p.m., dinner starts at 6 p.m. Entertainment is scheduled at 7 p.m., a Polynesian revue. The event is a major fundraiser for Rotary Club projects, including money given to Pahrump Valley High School youth programs. The Rotary Club needs to sell all 300 tickets. Anyone who wants tickets can contact any Rotarian or buy tickets at One-Hour Martinizing, 1050 S. Dandelion Street. If anyone has questions they may call Dan Rodriguez at 910-9574. The prize winner will be announced 8:30 p.m. There will be prizes offered from a big screen television to a barbecue grill. Thank you On behalf of B. J. DAR schedules regular meeting The Pahrump Springs Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will be holding a regular monthly meeting at the Pahrump Community Library at 10 a.m. Sept. 12. Marilyn Stack will present a program on the history of quilt making. The DAR Museum quilt collection will be presented by Julia Burton Avery. Anyone interested in attending is welcome. Community choir meeting The Pahrump Community Choir meets from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. each Wed. at the Rosemary Clarke Middle School music room. Anyone who likes to sing is welcome. Call 751-6957 for more information. Wine and cheese reception The Pahrump Arts Council is holding a wine and cheese reception open to the public. The event will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Sept. 14 at the Charleston Peak RV Resort Clubhouse located at 3810 Winery Road #2, adjacent to the PV Winery. The current gallery provides a colorful backdrop for the event to honor PAC artists and galleries which include: Nye County Courthouse, PV Library and PV Senior Center. Additionally, PAC offers the Artist in Residence demonstrations and Art for Young People classes. It promises to be a vibrant mix of artists and art-minded leaders who keep Pahrump focused on the visual arts. There is no charge for this event, donations are accepted. Emery, is as follows: Sept. 13--Nevada Early Intervention Services explore and learn play group 11 a.m. Sept. 18--Teen Parenting Class 2 - 4 p.m. Sept. 20 --Family vehicle safety class 3:45 p.m. Registration is required and there is a fee. Sept. 21--Infant and child CPR 1 p.m. Registration is required. Sept. 24--Family vehicle safety class 1 p.m.; Spanish only. Registration is required and there is a fee. Sept. 28--Nevada Early Intervention Services explore and learn play group. 11 a.m. The Back to Basics Parenting class is at 3 p.m. every Wednesday (parents with children birth to 5 years old). Play group is at 1 p.m. every Thursday. Resource Lending Library is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Retired/senior volunteer program The Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteers need help. This program enables the elderly to stay in their homes by assisting with daily maintenance such ash shopping, medical appointments, etc. RSVP reimburses volunteers twenty-four cents per mile up to $20 per month and carries worker's compensation and excess auto liability on all volunteers. Additionally, volunteers receive training, annual seminar education and appreciation award dinners. To volunteer, call Jan Lindsay at 751-5282. Elks soccer shoot Pahrump Elks Lodge #2796 is conducting a soccer shoot with registration starting at 8 a.m. Sept. 22 at Honeysuckle Park. The competition is open to boys and girls 13 years of age and under. The child's birthday should have occured by Aug. 1. A trophy will be awarded to the winners of each age group during the Elks youth awards banquet next May. Senior tap classes The Nevada Silver Tappers are starting new dance classes this month. It's great exercise, camaraderie and fun; and an opportunity to assist in providing support to seniors, the less fortunate and nonprofit organizations throughout the community. Caregiver training Nathan Adelson Hospice is providing a two-day workshop to teach individuals caregiving in a home/hospice or health care/nursing home environment. The special training class is scheduled for 8:30 a.m., Sept. 17 and 18. The 16 hours of training is free. Participants will receive a certificate of attendance. Space is limited. Reservations must be made no later than Sept. 13. The workshop will be held in the conference room at Nathan Adelson Hospice, 1480 E. Calvada Blvd., Suite 900. For more information call Tonya Brum at 751-5601. Host families/ reps needed Into Edventures is currently looking for host families in the local area to host a foreign exchange student. These young ambassadors are all between the ages of 15 and 18 years of age and all speak English. Student profiles will begin arriving in January for students from a variety of countries. They come with their own medical insurance and spending money. Into Edventures is also looking for individuals to work as area representatives. Reps are needed to find host families and work with students and their families during placement. Individuals must enjoy teenagers and have good communication skills. Poetry jam Poetry and coffee at Lois Layne's Deli is an ongoing poetry series and will meet from 10 a.m. to noon, Sept. 15. Readings from the great poets alternate with open mike. Film Festival The Pahrump Arts Council will present the High Desert Shorts International Film Festival Sept. 27-30 at the Pahrump Nugget. The film festival features short films and documentaries with related activities, awards and discussions. Thursday, Sept. 27: VIP tickets for a film viewing bus trip from Nugget to Winery & back with entertainment at the Winery and a Dinner Mystery Theatre at the Pahrump Nugget $75. Dinner Mystery Theatre $35. Film Competition Friday evening, Saturday, Sept. 28, and afternoon on Sept. 29. Winners Showcase and Animated Shorts on Sunday afternoon. Tickets are available the at Chamber of Commerce weekdays only, PAC office on Monday and Thursday 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. or at the door of the Events Center in the Pahrump Nugget before each event.
