Defense class The Nye County Sheriff Department in partnership with the community and Homeland Heros will present a two-day women's defense class. The class is held at the VFW Post 10054, 4651 Homestead Road, from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 10 and 11. This is a no-nonsense self defense course taught by Nye County law enforcement officers and includes techniques on awareness of your surroundings; what to do when surprised by an attacker; what not to do or what to do when attacked; and how to neutralize an attacker. Friends of the Library The Friends of the Library will have the September meeting on Sat., Sept. 8. Bob Alvis as guest speaker. The meeting will be held in the conference room at 9 a.m. Computer users meet The Pahrump Computer User Group will meet at 1 p.m. Sept. 10 at the Pahrump Community Library meeting room. The program this month will include a presentation on how to create your own personal Internet site and a demonstration on how to make multimedia videos and movies and burn them onto a DVD. Jim Gibbons and his wife, Dawn, will appear at a fundraiser for the Republican Party at the Pahrump Nugget events center. Retired/senior volunteer program The Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteers need help. This program enables the elderly to stay in their homes by assisting with daily maintenance such ash shopping, medical appointments, etc. RSVP reimburses volunteers twenty-four cents per mile up to $20 per month and carries worker's compensation and excess auto liability on all volunteers. Voces Latinas The Pahrump Arts Council presents Voces Latinas, a showcase of artwork by fifteen artists representing the diverse range of creative voices within the Latino community. The exhibit is curated by the Nevada Museum of Art and is part of the Nevada Arts Council Nevada Touring Initiative Program. The exhibit may be seen at the Nye County courthouse 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. daily, Mon. - Fri., until Sept. 19. Job Fair The State of Nevada Division of Welfare and Supportive Services is sponsoring a Job Fair and would like to invite job seekers in the community of Pahrump and surrounding areas to attend. Caregiver training Nathan Adelson Hospice is providing a two-day workshop to teach individuals caregiving in a home/hospice or health care/nursing home environment. Women entrepreneur group forming A support group is forming for women who either own a business in Pahrump or are interested in starting one. Host families/reps needed Into Edventures is currently looking for host families in the local area to host a foreign exchange student. These young ambassadors are all between the ages of 15 and 18 years of age and all speak English. Student profiles will begin arriving in January for students from a variety of countries. They come with their own medical insurance and spending money, Into Edventures is also looking for individuals to work as area representatives. Reps are needed to find host families and work with students and their families during placement. Individuals must enjoy teenagers and have good communication skills. Volunteer Homeland Reserve Unit VHRU is an organized group of retired and former law enforcement officers with the mission of providing trained and experienced resources to public safety agencies in Nevada and, potentially, to surrounding areas. The Fall Season will begin Sept. 14 and run 10 consecutive weeks. Exchange students NWS Peace Program, a non-profit and CSIET-approved program, is looking for 10 caring families in the area to host high school students from Mongolia, Japan, Belgium, France and other countries. Exchange students host homes needed DM Discoveries, a government-monitored exchange student program, is seeking host families in Nye County and the surrounding areas for foreign exchange students due to arrive in August for the 2007-08 school year. Each student has full medical coverage, pocket money and has expressed a true desire to become a participating member of an American family - pitching in on everything from household chores to family discussions. Amargosa Outing The Amargosa Conservancy' second outing of the series will be Oct. 13 to the Tecopa basin. The group will meet at the Amargosa Conservancy office at 9:30 a.m.. This is a driving tour through the human and natural history of the ice age lake basin and includes 10 stops, all within walking distance of the points of interest.
