The Pahrump Valley High School boys' soccer team was "in excellent shape ... and has shown it is all about hustle."

So said Gene Smith Thursday, after the Trojans launched the 2007 fall season with a 10-0 rout of visiting Mesquite Virgin Valley.

"We hit the passing lanes, we hustled, and we got shots on goal," said Greg Leseberg, whose PVHS girls' team stopped Virgin Valley 6-2 in the nightcap of a non-league doubleheader against its Southern Nevada Class 3-A rival. For Leseberg, it was a successful start to his first season as the Lady Trojans' coach.

Pahrump Valley played non-league games against Boulder City Tuesday. Thursday, the boys travel to Lake Mead Christian Academy, while the girls are at home against Overton Moapa Valley. Both games start at 2:30 p.m.

"Our passing skills are a plus; they have the will to win, and they are unwilling to give up," said Smith, in his second season as coach.

Tyler Raymer scored three goals, with Alex Fonseca scoring twice and adding three assists. Shane Lindemann and Justin King shared the shutout in goal.

Breakaway goals by Emily Poertner and Brittany Orr paced Pahrump Valley's girls to victory. In the second half, the Trojans had two other goals nullified by offsides, but those penalties were more the result of Virgin Valley defenders unable to keep up with Pahrump Valley's girls, who had quicker breakaway speed than their defenders.

"Our girls played exceptionally well," said Leseberg, who succeeded Steve Coleman as coach. "We're pleased with the win."
