Columbia, Tenn., defeated Eden Prairie, Minn., 11-4, to win the American Legion baseball World Series, at Bartlesville, Okla.

Post 19, out of Columbia, finished the season with 53 wins in 63 starts. At the World Series, Columbia defeated Rockport, Ind., 7-4; Branford, Conn., 9-8; and Boyertown, Pa., 16-5, to advance to the quarter-finals.

The Tennessee team lost 8-5 to Eden Prairie, which advanced to the semifinals, where the Minnesotans defeated Tucson, Ariz., 8-3. Tucson had won the West regionals, eliminating Nevada champion Las Vegas Bishop Gorman along the way.

In the showdown game, Columbia outslugged Eden Prairie to claim the title.

Eden Prairie finished 54-6, while Tucson was 35-10; Boyertown 52-8; Bryant, Ark., 41-9; Bellingham, Wash., 54-6; Rockport, Ind., 29-8, and Branford, Conn., 31-8.

In the Williamsport, Pa., Little League World Series, Warner-Robins, Ga., edged Japan 3-2 in eight innings to win the championship.

The title game was a hit for the fans watching on television. The ABC telecast attracted a 3.5 overnight rating, which means 3.5 percent of 56 urban TV market households watched.

That's the highest overnight rating for the telecast since 2003, and was higher than ratings for Fox Saturday Major League Baseball telecasts and on ESPN Sunday nights.
